From my experience, there really isn't a foolproof way of getting a dog to not chew on things unless you put the items absolutely and definitely out of its reach. I saw once on Victoria's show where she taught the dog the "leave it" command, and after the dog learned the command, victoria ...

Perfecting "Watch Me"

Good afternoon everyone! My husband and I are currently working with our dog on the "Watch Me" command. I work on it lots and lots inside and so far, he gets it very well. We've started to move outside with the command, and most of the time, I work with him in an area with little or no dis...

The first few times we left our dog, as a test, we left decoy items (like a really old pair of shoes that were falling apart or something) in a not-obvious place but within his reach, to find out if he would go after the kind of things we wouldn't want him to. Sure enough, the items had been moved a...

I have tried a method similar to this, and to Mattie's method for about a month now, but sadly to no avail with my dog. It's so frustrating and disappointing. I walk with him and when he starts to get ahead of me, I drop the leash and change directions. He has learned to anticipate me changing direc...

I would be interested if you DO find a way to get your kleptomaniac dog to quit standing up at your counters! :) Crates are great if your dog will tolerate one. But if not, then every time you leave your house and leave him out, you just have to hope that you remembered to put absolutely everything ...

Having had to advise owners of dogs who have used this method and the dogs have become terrified of any similar noise which makes living a normal life difficult, I don't recommend it. We all use aluminum foil for cooking but these owners had to stop using this because of their dogs. Hmmm. Well... o...

I have heard (not necessarily here on this forum) of putting packing tape sticky side up on stuff you don't want the dog to touch such as magazines. Dog reaches for it, gets stuck in the tape, and it's uncomfortable enough to keep him from trying again. I have NOT tried this, it's just something I'...

Does this only happen when you are gone? Could you try crate training him or blocking your kitchen from his access? This won't teach him not to take anything from the counter, but it is probably going to be easier than trying to work against a behavior that he's only doing when you're not home! ;) T...

I'd take him right to the vet, get him treated, then bring him back to your house after treatment- let him settle in all at once. Getting acclimated is a really long process anyway.

I'd take her to the vet; something may be wrong physically.

You're welcome!

We moved to the city and we were looking for good places to do things with our dog, too, since most parks around here have signs up that say "DOGS MUST BE ON A LEASH".

I am not sure if I saw this here on this website or another website. But one person was buying babyfood to give to their dog :) The person said she just dipped her finger into the food a little and gave the dog a lick of the food on her finger as a reward. However, I am no engineer, and therefore no...

With our dog, we found a fenced in area nearby where we practice the Come and other off-leash commands. The area near us is actually a fenced in parking lot with a grassy area. You could try that, or even a tennis court that is fenced in. You could try a dog park, too, but good luck getting her to l...
