Re: Chief bit me!!

NILF I would not call abusive but it can certainly be unfair and unjust to your dog. A lot of time we have the wrong expectations and understand of what our dogs truly understand. For instance we often assume since our dog sits on command in our home that they will sit on command at the dog park. Th...

Re: Dog Aggression That Stems From Sniffing?

For a while there was a push to have dogs who have issues with other dogs on lead with a yellow ribbon. Unfortunately not many understand what the ribbon means so it did not catch on. Often times you will here people with their off-lead dogs say oh don't worry he's friendly....Do not be afraid to sa...

Re: Milo - Dislikes children, anti-social and aggression problem

Hello everyone. I have a miniature schnauzer named Milo who I love with all my heart. I got him as a puppy and because during his puppy years, I was working full-time in the summer and didn't get to socialize him as much as I wanted to. Now he is 6 years old and he has all of his basic obedience do...

Re: Overly reactive - at wit's end!!! :(

Hi everyone, My 19mo goldendoodle pup, Franklin, is really starting to drive us up the wall! He was always a very mellow pup, but with time has gotten more and more reactive, to triggers that never used to bother him before. Triggers include: - other dogs when walking on leash (esp big dark ones) -...

Re: Chief bit me!!

Lets look at this from his perspective for a moment. You gave him a treat...presumably a food item of something he likes. He chooses not to consume the treat immediately preferring perhaps to save it for later You reach back in and steal his food (treat). He growls to show you his discomfort and per...

Re: How much does "energy" matter?

As I read jacksdad post it reminded me of something else to add. "Trust" One fazctor in working with fearful dogs is how much trust they have in their owner/handler. I remember one of Khan's early successes. We were in line at the store to by dog toys and treats. A small child began runnin...

Re: How much does "energy" matter?

Mood, attitude and your own personality will be reflected in your relationship with your dog as well as training. The most important thing though is consistency. More than anything else you dog will respond better when signals are consistent. This is most evident obedience, rally, agility, freestyle...

Re: Puppy Class Structure

puppy play and socialization should be the primary emphasis of a puppy class...not obedience. play with other pups can be a huge reward and motivator for focus and attention.

Re: Favorite dog related movie or TV show

I pretty much love all dog movies, and movies with sled dogs even more. If you can find it (it's a limited release), Spirit of the Wind is a good one. I like Iron Will quite a lot, too. More current, and exceptionally well done, the BBC published documentary "Icebound - The Greatest Dog Story ...

Re: newly acquired breed *****

Even at age 7 Border Terriers can need lots of exercise and brain work. Have you looked into the possibility of doing things like agility, nosework, lure coursing, or earthdog with her? These will help both to build self confidence and provide lots of mental and physical stimulation for her. As far ...

Favorite dog related movie or TV show

I just saw "Hachi" and I still cannot stop shedding tears. What an incredible story and an incredible movie. If you haven't seen it and you like movies like "Old Yeller" and such this one is right up your alley. If you don't like crying you may want to skip this one cause you eye...

Re: What breed for me?

Now, this may just be a flight of fancy, but my life is starting to head into a place where I would have the time and place for a new dog. Marble will be moving out, leaving our house with only one dog for the first time in nearly a decade. My work schedule will become more flexible and less demand...

Re: Help! Severely traumatized rescue dog.

Unfortunately that you had to quit. You were taking the right approach as evident by the dog's response to a more forceful approach. The only thing I would add to Nettles advice is a game that I designed which helped a very good trainer I knew from Ohio with a few puppies in a similar state rescued ...

Can you drive him someplace where the triggers are less likely outside of your city?
