Re: Resource Guarding with the cat

My god, after reading your responses and actually thinking about it I feel like a jackass. Cardinal rule of positive reinforcement? If you're failing, you're MOVING TOO FAST. Set yourself up for success.... duh. Sorry for my newbie mistake, thank you for telling me to take a step back and reevaluat...

Re: dog and strangers

so far, I have tried giving my foster dog a treat when she sees a stranger from a distance, but it is only reinforcing her fear. she is still scared of the stranger and we are very far away. I think I am making too much out of the stranger which is reinforcing her fear. it is not working for her, a...

Re: Meet Jack

such pretty colouring! reminds me so much of my family dog, corey (mama to my heart dog, gremlin) - she was a foxy/chi cross and could climb trees and used to hunt snakes and all sorts! :D

very handsome boy you are, jack!

Re: gotta tell people who'll understand

raaaaaaarrrghhh...sorry all, just have to bump this thread to share with people who'll understand! recently here (in australia) there was a tragic instance where a roaming pit bull entered a house (the door was open) and mauled a 4 year old girl to death in her living room. there has been such a kne...

Re: Anyone heard from Noobs???

oh gosh, what a heartbreak for you noobs *HUGS* :( echo the sentiment to step back from the neighbors with the puppy - perhaps give (or lend if you already have them?) them a copy of one of victoria's or patricia mcconnells books? i know you can't make them read it, but perhaps if they have it there...

Re: Training severely traumatized/abused rescue dog

I'm disappointed in your responses and I should've looked down through the forums first to see the kind of 'care' you handle your dogs and guests. If I could unregister, I would. But now, I'm going somewhere else for answers - somewhere where people are more grounded in reality. Don't bother respon...

Re: Raw Food Diet

i think if you guys were anything like me, the "NEVER EVER EVER give your dog chicken bones" (meaning COOKED chicken bones) indoctrination was so strong during childhood that i was also highly confused about why raw chicken was one of the best things recommended for dogs on a raw diet (or ...

Re: Seperation Anxiety

ah excellent - thankyou for the further explanation, emmabeth! sorry, i didn't mean to imply that the 'totally ignore' approach WAS suggested, just that if that was what the OP was doing (as it sounded like) it may contribute to the anxiety. i thought the more 'low key' approach as flyby and yoursel...

Re: Seperation Anxiety

We also will go outside for a few minutes and when we come back in everytime say nothing to her..no touch/eye contact/no talking to her until she calmed down which is usually within 2-3 minutes we even have taught our children to do the same. When you come back in from the training separation, some...
