A game I've always played with my dogs is putting a small treat in one hand, holding out both and asking 'which one?' If the dog doesn't get it right the first time, it's try try again. I do this several times in a row--I always put my hands behind my back so the dog can't see which one will hold th...

When I first brought Flanders home, she was three months old and her former owner had been told that while training, dogs should be kept on a leash or crated, hence poor Flanders never got much exercise time. The first full day I had her, she spent it exploring her new home, including the yar...

E It's been a long time since dogs were wolves. So, applying pack behavior too strongly to domestic dogs, (even though some of those instincts are present) I think is a mistake and gets people side tracked from what has really been demonstrated that works.....learning theory, behaviorism. Pack theo...

Stop beating yourself up, that won't help you or Belle. Nobody is perfect, I know I have made lots of mistakes in the past, how we handle the mistake is more important than the mistake. Hope you understand that. :D Can you let me have a photo of Belle and I will send Reiki to her, it may help. I ag...

Question: is there a fostering program in Great Britain?
There are times on the show where Victoria takes Problem Dog's owners to a shelter as a teaching tool. I'm just curious to know whether or not there's a fostering program in England. :?: I don't know when fostering started over here in the US (90s I think), but I think it's made a lot of difference ...

All I can suggest is learn to be proactive: put foodstuffs and other items where she can't reach them. I learned this the hard way: when she was a puppy, Flanders tore up two hard-back books, one of which I was still reading. Little creep. :x If Gigi is counter-surfing, maybe some of Victoria's soun...

The three fat dogs--how are they doing now?
Animal Planet reran that episode last night, and again, I was just appalled at the way the dogs looked! At the end, two of the three looked really good even though they still had some ways to go. I wonder how Gizmo, Jess, and Hattie are doing now? Has Hattie finally slimmed down? Are Gizmo and Jess ...

I love the visual aids Victoria uses!
They really illustrate the problem/issue and do so in a humorous way. I think my favorite is the hierarchy in Teddy Pom Pom's house before and after the training: the first one showed Teddy at the very top with his underlings beneath him. This was Teddy's house and you're exceedingly luc...

How do you cope with thunder phobia?
I usually just try to comfort the dog, but not make a big production of it. Trying to engage the dog in play just doesn't work, or at least it didn't with my second Dobe, whose whose weather sense put the TV guys to shame. My current two aren't that sensitive, but when there is a thunderstorm, they ...

I always recall my gran giving her dogs chopped fresh parsley with their dinner (an attractive garnish?!) as she said it was great for doggy digestion and stopped their windypops. Might be an old wives tale... but worth a shot? Man, I wish I knew that years ago! My second Dobe was the high king of ...
