Re: Dogs won't wee on wet grass

I think that it probably just something new for them. Our chihuahua mix who here in Albuquerque is still not used to the hot stones in our xeriscape yard, loves it when we visit my parents in the San Frqncisco Bay Area and our house in Maine, both areas where there is plenty of wet grass. Just give ...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Gwd, Both my OH and I laughed at that story. She and her dog couldn't have done that if they tried. Nettie, Yes, the afghan is a high value item to me, but after making it 40 years ago and having been around the world with me during my 10 years living in Israel, Tucson, San Francisco, Maine, a...

Re: Hope for hector?

Hi, I have a chihuahua Italian greyhound mix who is 3 1/2 years old. We got him from the shelter where he had been twice. They neutered him when he was 11months old which is late for a male dog. Has Hector been neutered and at what age was he? Male dogs who haven't been neutered or neutered late can...

Re: Management vs. Training

Nettie, Great explanation! As you said it is succinct. I've decided that there are four things I do need to train: 1. Come when called for his safety and ours. 2. Drop things that are dangerous to his well being. 3. Walk without pulling and hurting his neck. 4. Stop jumping at the TV everytime he se...

Re: Management vs. Training

I don't want to sound stupid, but I've seen this often as in emmabeth's post. What does OH mean? As to sleeping arrangements, we close the door and don't let Sandy into the bedroom except under certain circumstances such as one room hotel rooms. I refuse to have the dog on the bed. Part of the reaso...

Re: Chihuahua mix 3 & half yrs. attacks at animals on TV

An update: Today, I decided to try the clicker training while watching TV with Sandy. I had practiced with him a few days ago with clicking and treating. Today, after watching VS 's YouTube on clicker training as well as a few others such as drop it and take it. So, today, with clicker attached to b...

Re: Management vs. Training

I am really learning a lot here even though I didn't post this topic, I really like it. Jacksdad, I love the way you put it management versus training and how to pick battles. It really makes a lot of sense to me. I will be keeping this in mind as I work with my chihuahua mix, Sandy. :D Thanks, Diane

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Claremarsh, Thanks for the information, in particular about the carrots. I hadn't though if it not being digested and then just taking up space. The chicken bone was ingested in the middle of the night at the hotel, then we spent another night on the road and the following day, it came out with a bl...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Ari_RR, Talking again about early morning walks, I have a funny story. My parents live in the hills near Stanford University on the peninsula south of San Francisco and north of San Jose. I took Sandy for a walk on the rural roads during which we saw a young deer. Sandy of course went bezerk never h...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Claremarsh & gwd, Thanks for your suggestions. I bought a clicker and have been reading about Karen Pryor's methods that I found out about on this forum. I've also watched VS's video on YouTube on clicker training. And, I intend to use it with his TV problems. As pointed out by VS and Pryor, it ...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Gwd, First, thanks for the idea of the dehydrated food. Just checked it out. I'm giving him kibble since all my readings have said that small dogs including chihuahuas have a tendency to have dental problems and lose their teeth. Therefore, they say kibble in adjunct to dental care is better food. I...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Thank you to all who responded, First, Sandy weighs between 10-11.5 pounds. He weighed 9.5 the day we got him and you could see his ribs. His last check up, he was 11.5 pounds. And, the vet felt he was a good weight. I definitely wouldn't want him to gain more. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w6...

Re: Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Addendum: took him for walk run using my walker for 20 minutes. Drank water & got treat. Then, 20 minutes later vomited up all treats from this morning. At least we have tile floors in main living areas: living room or great room, kitchen, hallways. Has a tendency for vomiting. Has been check se...

Sandy the chihuahua mix--feeding problems , NEED HELP

Hi, I'm at my wits end about feeding Sandy. He is 3 1/2 yo chihuahua mix (some say they think w/Italian Greyhound). He has longer legs and his girth (all bones) is 17 in. We adopted him from the shelter at age 1yr., & know he we returned twice. In one home, he was with a cat and know that one on...
