Re: Large dog, little owner.
Zaksmum, your dog is absolutely gorgeous! I read this thread with interest since I'm having a similar situation with my dog. She's an 80 pound Golden mix and I'm 5' 2" and 104 pounds - no match for her on walks when she sees another dog (or cat) and begins to lunge and pull to get to them. It's...

What a handsome boy! I love that mischievous look in his eye in the first pic - he's a charmer for sure!

Re: Recall
Fundog, I know very little about Layla's breeding background. I was told she was Golden/Bernese Mt. Dog, but I'm almost positive she is a Golden/Collie mix. She has a lot of Golden in her and that is what she most strongly resembles. I've had Goldens in the past and have known many others - my Layla...

Re: Recall
Mattie, your techniques are solid for the recall and I so appreciate your taking the time to post them. But here's where I need I a bit more help. Layla, our 14 month old rescued 80 lb. Golden mix, is not even remotely food driven and rarely plays with us even though we do try. She does enjoy playin...

Re: best kind of dog food
Salome, I know this thread is a bit old, but I just had to write and say a huge thank you for all the information you have given here. My large Golden mix is one of the least food driven dogs on the planet and dinner time was a huge struggle to get her to eat even half of what we offered her. I also...

Re: Introducing an adult shelter dog to 2 existing cats..
I wanted to add just a few more bits of information to my previous post. First, it's important to note that Layla was accustomed to being crated and comfortable with being in one before coming to me. Also, I made sure she had a few fun things in there with her, like a large rawhide bone, and toys to...

Re: Introducing an adult shelter dog to 2 existing cats..
We recently rescued an 80 pound golden retriever and I too was concerned about how she would do with my three cats. They're used to dogs, but it takes them awhile to get comfortable with a new one in the house. I was more concerned about Layla (the dog) and how she would react to the cats. On the ad...

Re: Walking a Large Strong Dog
I have a habit of losing track of the posts I contribute to, but I just stumbled across this one again and wanted to thank you guys for all the helpful information. I have started doing the turn technique with Layla and she's already doing better on the leash. My main challenge is that there are man...

Re: My SHIH Tzu is aggressive towards females
Nettie, I completely respect your take on this subject. But I stick to my guns on this one. I firmly believe that only male dogs of impecible breeding who are intended to promote their breed should be left unaltered if for no other reason than to ensure that there are no more unwanted dogs brought i...

Re: My SHIH Tzu is aggressive towards females
Chewie, I am not a dog trainer by profession, but a veterinary techinician, so while I can't speak to how neutering your dog will affect his training, (though I have to believe once his body is no longer flooded with testosterone and he's not consumed with the desire to mate he would be all the more...

Re: Walking a Large Strong Dog
Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate the input. Jacksdad, now that you detailed the main differences between the two methods, I can see the added benefit of changing directions and I will most likely go that route, especially since my dog (when she's not pulling on me) tends to step right in front of...

Re: Walking a Large Strong Dog
Okay, so let's see if I'm getting all this right. I have an 80 lb. golden retriever/bernese mt. dog mix we rescued just last week. She's sweet and willing and seems quite intelligent, but she does pull mightily on her lead when we walk, especially if she sees another animal. I watched Victoria Still...
