Rabbit guarding
Not a good walk this morning... :( Out on the heath, Jasper demonstrated that is is possible to catch and kill a rabbit while wearing a basket muzzle :( I think it must have sprung up from between his front legs and bashed its head on the muzzle... Because of his issues (original thread here: http:/...

Re: Help crating 4yr old rescue
I cannot leave him out on his own when we leave if we go to our camp or visit relatives. Do you mean that you plan to take him and his crate with you when you camp or visit relatives? I think given his background you will have to slow the process down and work out other ways of keeping him safe. Tw...

Re: A bit of a rant.
It's such a relief to me to hear that Martin's doing well and is happy, so it must be even more so to you... But heartbreaking for you at the same time. Knowing that he is well cared for and that he is making a difference to a disabled child, I have no idea what I would do in the same situation. You...

Re: Shadow won't come
I agree with the above. Plus, start in the house, then move to the garden, and only then to outside areas, using a long line. Treat him when he comes to you and unless you really have to get him on lead, let him go & play again so he doesn't associate recall with the end of the walk/game. A tech...

Re: my dog has turned into a bully!!
She sounds similar to Jasper, and you'll be glad to hear that he has improved enormously over the last few months (he's now 20 months) :D He was always submissive to other dogs, and seemed to be the lowest of the low in terms of the hierarchy of the local dogs. Then I think he realised, like your do...

Re: Seasonal Affective Disorder in dogs
That's why I always ask people to get their male dogs checked for swollen prostate - it must hurt like hell but isn't a routine part of a vet check unless you have a vet like mine. Heehee, my vet was reluctant enough to check his thyroid levels, I can't wait to ask him to check Jasper's prostrate! ...

Seasonal Affective Disorder in dogs
This is out of interest, really... for now at any rate. Around last Xmas, Jasper, who was around a year old, became much quieter and subdued. He didn't want to play, or go for walks, when I greeted him in the morning he didn't respond, nor did he respond when OH came in from work. For some of this t...

Re: A proud moment
To tell some people, with 'normal' dogs about this incident, they would look at me like I was mad because their dogs letanyone say hello to them.... I so know what you mean! We walked past a kebab in the gutter and he didn't attack me when I said 'leave'... He couldn't get the last biscuit out of t...

Re: Chase drive Vs Prey Drive
That's funny, I was just thinking abut this this morning! Chase drive is what Jasper does with squirrels. It's fun, but the darned things keep climbing trees so he doesn't always bother. He once took off after a squirrel when he was on a 6' lead but the moment there was any tension on the lead he st...

Re: What has your smart dog figured out?
I've tried teaching Jasper words like 'toy', 'ball', and so on, but he's a bit slow on the uptake. He's still got a pretty large vocabulary, though. I realised one day when he was mucking about on the lead that he understood and responded to 'walk nicely', though I'd never tried to teach it and only...

Re: Jealousy
I would try asking him to do 'something'..... and rewarding him for it, so you should end up with a clear 'this is what I do when another dog says Hi to my Mum' and a reward for this so 'other dogs approach Mum, I get goodies'. But be low key about it, you don't want the proximity of goodies to tip...

Re: Poo eating problems
I have read that feeding your dog some pineapple can prevent this as it makes their poos taste bad. No idea if it actually works, or how healthy it is for the dog though!

Re: Today's Exciting Encounter
All totalled, I think our walk on leash may only have been 15 or 20 minutes. Dottie's off-leash time was only three minutes. But I think both of us have had our heart rates accellerated enough to satisfy us the rest of the day. Dottie is in her "den" under my desk, snoozing conten...

Jealousy
On the whole Jasper is fantastic with other dogs. He's generally polite and submissive, though recently if a young dog bounces up to him with bad manners he will get a little stroppy and try to put it in its place. He's respectful to most dogs, and is very happy to play with ones who are keen to pla...
