Re: Retrieve to hand (ball and treat method)?

I've never even heard of that method before and really don't understand how it would work. Mine would all have just destroyed the tennis ball to get at the treat, no need for my help there!

Are you looking for a formal retrieve or just a fun one?

Re: Has anyone heard if this....

I know someone who did the one off and they said they won't be doing it again as a lot of the stuff they got was stuff their dogs wrecked easily or weren't interested in. I'd give it a go if I were in the UK though to be honest. Spen's not fussy when it comes to treats or toys and I can easily spend...

Re: Puppy Adolescence Has Hit!

For the most part it's just a matter of keeping up with the training and being consistent with whatever rules you have for them. And keeping on telling yourself that it will pass. Me and Spen are on the downward slope now, he's 18 months old and hit adolescence properly at around 12 months. http://d...

Re: Fill n squeeze

Will definitely be looking into them! Although it's not that often I'm taking raw out with me these days, we seem to be on the downward slope of the teenage phase now and he's much more responsive and seems to find actually working with me rewarding rather than just doing it for the food. I do still...

Re: Loose Lead walking

I dunno whether this method has already been mentioned in the thread but just started trying it with Spencer and seem to be having great results so far. We've graduated to working on it just outside our flat and he's doing fantastic. He's making a real effort to keep that leash loose and stay by my ...

Re: Routine

Pretty much what Nettle says when we visit anywhere or move house. I've found dogs tend not to generalise house training, they seem to just learn "don't pee in this house" rather than "don't pee indoors". After a couple of days of that sort of routine though I've been able to let...

Re: Routine

Sounds fine to me to be honest. She gets a hell of a lot more than most dogs do. Can't help on the not asking to go out issue, Spen doesn't ask either, I just take him out on a regular schedule and am happy with that. I do a lot of shaping sessions with Spencer, most of them silly and pointless tric...

Re: Help! Over excited 9mth old

What's she fed? Food can have a big impact on behaviour sometimes. How much exercise does she get each day? What about mental activity? Also, what sort of bulldog is she? There's a big difference between say British and American Bulldogs so might be helpful to know exactly what you've got :D If you ...

Re: Different training methods for different dogs?!

A lot of husky people say the breed should never be off leash unless it's a fully enclosed area because they don't have the best recall. Long lines and things like cycling or jogging with the dog are how a lot keep them sufficiently exercised if they don't have a suitable place for them to run free....

Spen does it too. On the roughly 20 minute walk to the big fields he will poo 3 times. Take him to the field by the flat, he poos once.

Re: Study that challenges "hungry dogs train better"

You know, there are people who bring their dog to training classes without even making sure it has peed and pooed first. In fact - most of them. Never mind a hungry dog: these poor beasts have been shut in all day, then fed, straight in the car and off to training. Lol, this was pretty much ...

Re: Study that challenges "hungry dogs train better"

I've never really bothered with the "train your dog when he's hungry" thing. I tried it with Rupert as he was so uninterested in food but it had absolutely zero effect. Spen throws up bile if he goes more than about 8 hours on an empty stomach so obviously I try to avoid that and he gets h...

Friends! :D I'd love a really good reason to have to take in another dog for a bit, to see how Jasper coped with a live-in friend. Not that I have any intention of getting another dog, oh no no no.... I'd love a second dog but we can't afford one. And I wouldn't want to add one full time at ...

A friend was going back to the UK and the person who was supposed to be looking after her dog had something come up at the last minute, genuine something but still left her stuck. So knowing how frantic I'd be if I had to rush back to the UK and had nobody to look after Spencer I said we'd introduce...
