Re: 'Good' vs 'bad' dogs

Ah, I love these discussions - I do hope others join in! Did you ever read "The Count of Monte Christo"? I have to paraphrase because my copy isn't to hand - but right at the end, the author says words to the effect that there is no such thing as happiness or sadness, just the constant com...

I wouldn't tell you what to do with your own dog that you manage so well! :) You see more on the spot in real life than someone else can see on a vid. It all went okay.

Don't forget I've spent umpteen years working with highly reactive dogs so I tend to be over-cautious.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

IME it's very often an indication that the humpee smells 'different' so the humper tries a series of behaviours in order to clarify what is okay and what isn't. Most common causes are a neutered dog that smells not quite Arthur or Martha, or anal gland issues, though some medication can cause ambiva...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

"The cobbler's children go unshod". That's what I have been demonstrating with my dog. As with all of mine, I work very hard in training for the first two years, then put my metaphorical feet up for the next ten because the dog is how I like dogs to be. Meanwhile, until my retirement this ...

Re: Searching for safe bully stick alternatives...

Lamb trachea from the butcher (as opposed to pet shop which may have been imported from dubious sources) always did well for mine. Some dogs like pig ears and tails from the same source. They don't last all that long, but give good chewing. Corgis have very strong jaws so I doubt there is much that ...

I'm so sorry you have lost your cat. What a beautiful picture of him. It doesn't matter how long we have had them or how much we know we have made the right decision, it is damned hard. Hugs.

 how to lean about breed differences.............

It would make a great game - which breed shows stress this way? Drooling, heel-nipping, hand grabbing, counter surfing, toy shredding, deer chasing, galloping about in all directions, galloping in a straight line over the horizon etc. ad inf.

Re: Helping with a reactive dog

You are more expert than many. You can read dog body language, you can anticipate, you can judge stress distances and you also understand a dog releasing built-up stress after a tense outing. You have given a good suggestion and I hope it is followed. If only people would discard their 'shoulds' and...

My word, didn't the months go by quickly! He certainly looks a fine example of his breed - and rather lovely too. A credit to you.

Re: Dolichocephaly

Same experiences here. Dogs do a cost/benefit analysis involving complex mathematics, taking in speed, terrain, wind direction, trajectory, likelihood of fighting back, and meat poundage for effort if successful. Whatever the dog's head (or body) shape, I'd expect it to be opportunistic for scavengi...

Re: Dolichocephaly

I couldn't access the link, but it used to be put about that brachy dogs were superior in intelligence because they could get more brains in their skulls  which says a lot about the scientists who thought of that one. If only the greyhounds had been given something worth scenting! You can just ...
