Re: Change of behaviour

Glad to hear he's feeling better! :) I think the avoiding trick-or-treaters idea is a good one. You may be able to get away with having him stowed away from the door with a lovely special treat to chew on, but you know him best. Some dogs find hearing all the noises stressful enough!

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Opal had her cruciate ligament repair recently, so I'm going to dress up the front of the house in some cute Halloween-themed "DANGER" and "DO NOT ENTER" ribbon. I'll add a note about how the house has been quarantined due to paranormal activity, and here's a bowl of candy to tak...

Re: Change of behaviour

I hope all is well with him, but it's better to check with the vets and know rather than find out in the middle of the night when things are very serious very suddenly!

Re: Change of behaviour

If my dog were acting oddly suddenly, I would be visiting the vets to see what they think. Sometimes, an observant owner bringing in a dog who just seems a little off can catch a serious health problem before it becomes extremely expensive or painful. Here are a few examples a vet talked about, conc...

Re: Breed suggestions?

Now I'm imagining the confusion when I tell people my poodle and my Irish water spaniel are two different breeds...lol! I'll look into the spaniels, though most have leg feathering. I imagine working lines wouldn't have as much as show lines, so maybe they're an option! I don't really care for beagl...

Breed suggestions?

Hey y'all! I’m daydreaming about puppies so I’m starting to research for next dog, even though it's probably a year or so until I should get them. I want to do SAR or human remains detection so that changes the picture from previously when I wanted a chill smaller dog. Requirements: -high endurance,...

Re: intact male anatomy

Not really. It may make an appearance when the dog is excited, though, and for a young lab that might be "whenever we do anything or see anyone or go anywhere." ;)

The Facebook group "Canine Enrichment" is my new favorite. A lot of ideas that can be done without equipment or with things you may have already, or can get without breaking the bank. :)

Re: Early planning of possible second dog

It does sound like you have practice working with the kind of behavior shelties sometimes have! I would probably avoid herding line shelties (if people still breed them for herding specifically), but otherwise if you don't mind repeating the training, it will at least be a familiar path. :)

Re: Early planning of possible second dog

We've had two very different shelties in our classes recently. One is a firecracker, smart as a whip and confident. The other is soft and sweet, still very smart but not as confident. I believe she was a recent rescue and she grew more sure of herself through the class. They can be barky, so if that...

Re: teeth

Did the vet examine for fractures? A cracked tooth could cause trouble and are sometimes difficult to see. I'd also check the inside of his mouth (or ask the vet to check) for any swelling or soreness. I hope he's just feeling more nutritionally fulfilled with his food and is getting more picky! But...

Re: Early planning of possible second dog

I'm following the growth of a few silkens that my friends own. They seem like lovely stable dogs, but they were from fantastic breeders so that definitely has something to do with it. Multiple are service dog prospects and are showing promise in that field. If you're interested in the structure of s...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

It looks like y'all had a great time with Ari! Though he looks like he'd rather keep walking than take pictures, haha. :) I've done two nosework sessions with Delta, working not with the stinky bones but with ground cloves sewn into a little fabric pocket and stuffed inside a tug toy. We'll work wit...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I've started to be fascinated by cadaver detection dogs, to the point of acquiring the Cadaver Dog Handbook to read about the training and so on. I was wary, because they work closely with the police, and between that and it being based on decades-old tracking (with possibly decades-old training ide...
