Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Aaah, a 5 generation pedigree definitely weights it a lot lower than it actually is. Take this graph from the site I linked earlier: http://i.imgur.com/ByeQcZO.png The green line, the 5 generation pedigree, puts the inbreeding of the Papillon at 4.5% in 2020. The 10 generation pedigree, the red line...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Frankly I was surprised the poodle was so low on the list! Still, the level of inbreeding is above that of a breeding from half-siblings (with no history of inbreeding). All the breeds have higher than ideal inbreeding, except for the sloughi. The sloughi was only added to the AKC last year, so I'm ...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

The GSD is actually at 28th most inbred of the breeds tested in the above study, with a COI of about 40%, genetically. As I said, with creativity and resources, you can have low inbreeding on paper that is not reflected in the actual DNA of the dog. A closed studbook means there is no new genetic ma...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Whoops, it was the Sloughi, not the Saluki, with the lowest!

Inbreeding of Purebred Dogs Determined from DNA

This list does have info on the American Rat Terrier -- it's the 23rd most inbred breed of those tested :(

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

I'm trying to find another link I had but I can guarantee you no popular breed, on average, has under 6% inbreeding coefficient genetically. With some creativity you can do breedings that, on paper, give you a COI (coefficient of inbreeding) of 0, but a breed with a closed studbook for any length of...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Those breeds are on the decline in the UK because, presumably, people don't want them as much. Good breeders don't breed if they don't think they can find homes for all the puppies. And note that those are dogs in decline *in the UK*. The bloodhound, for example, has been hanging around #50 most pop...

Re: Rescue dog guarding

It sounds like he does feel safer in the crate. Some dogs don't like crates, but if he goes in easily then it's definitely an option! If you aren't having problems with housetraining or dangerous behavior while you're gone (chewing wires, playing with shards of glass, etc), you probably don't need t...

Fingers crossed that the meds work well for y'all! And happy one-month birthday to your grandson :D

I'm glad your pups made it easy on you passing those two after the loose dog encounter :) Good pups!

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I think last year I noted that Delta went for his sweet potato before the steak and chicken wings I'd put in his dinner, and it was theorized that the sweet potato was fastest to eat and that was why it went first! Well today, Delta ONLY ate the sweet potato  which I think, in his case, points ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

It's Delta's birthday today! I'll probably take him down to his favorite pet store later and get him a couple of his favorite chews/treats, and get him some chicken wings, green beans, and sweet potato for dinner (some of his favorites foods). :)

Re: Help! Shepherd husky puppy is making me cry

And it is very difficult to not fall in love with puppies! They hit all of our genetic ancestral "tags" for "hey take this thing and care for it even if it's a pain in the butt." It's why people find pugs cute -- puppies and a lot of brachycephalic (squish-faced) dogs look like b...

Re: What would you do

Sometimes it's a question of looking harder -- there are breeders of nice GSDs, physically and mentally, out there, but they can be tricky to find. If he doesn't want to go on a difficult and exhausting search for a good GSD and then wait possibly years for a puppy, then yes, I think getting out of ...

Smaller dogs also usually need a higher percentage than large dogs.

Re: vomiting

Yellow foamy usually means "hunger pukes" to me. Veggies are often given to bulk out meals and have a dog feel fuller, so I would see if adding them back in helps him. The other option is feeding another meal each day so there's not as much time when his stomach is empty.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I find a "Please call and leash your dogs" (and possibly a second "Leash your dog!") work fairly well most of the time. Or pulling out my phone and saying "I'm calling animal control, as this is a place for on-leash dogs only" usually at least gets them moving away, rat...
