Re: do spray bottles work

In the case of the OP's dog, I have nothing to add to the previous posts. But it would be wrong to deny that a spray bottle can work without harming a dog in some cases. Please don't misunderstand me - I am not advocating their use, mainly because there are alternatives and the cases where it would ...

Mainland UK doesn't have much of a stray dog problem at all When did you last go round a dog pound choosing which dogs you could find a rescue place for and which to leave behind to die? If we don't have many dogs wandering the streets in the UK it's because we have a dog warden/pound system in pla...

If you are not familiar with clicker training, then don't start until you have a basic understanding of it. I highly encourage you to check out Karen Pryor's clicker training website here: http://clickertraining.com/ It starts from the very beginning, down to "how does it work?" and every...

Re: Another great dog video - taking agility to a new level!

I thought dogs had to be at least 2 before they start jumping to give their bones time to develop. There is evidence both in horses and dogs that the earlier training begins, the less likelihood there is of injury or long term problems. Of course that depends on starting slowly and increasing stres...

Even if this one is too far away, if you click on Sister Shelter you'll see that they cooperate with other shelters to find homes.

I sort of suspect that these people are so used to being considered do-gooders that when something goes wrong, they lose it a bit. Like, they can't acknowledge that it's possible that things they do aren't good 100% of the time. The reaction I got seemed outsized for the truly minor suggestion I ma...

I could have written that word for word Pam... and I have tried in the past in a variety of places and got exactly the responses you quote. I have to admit that it hasn't happened to me personally but it has really made me mad when I've spent a lot of effort trying to persuade someone to get a resc...

people skills It's the lack of people skills that annoys me most. The last thing a rescue should want to do is alienate potential adopters. If they can't get to speak to someone they go away. If they do pin someone down that person is rude to them. Criticise the operation in any way and yopu get &q...

If a dog is fully housetrained, then notifying you to use the restroom should come naturally Not necessarily. All my dogs have been houstrained the same way and only one of them tells me when he wants to go out. All the rest wait until I choose to let them out. I'd rather a dog was prepared to wait...

I agree with Fundog. Really, though it's no big deal if a dog doesn't tell the owner it wants to go. Most of mine don't - they wait until I let them out - but I know when this is likely to be. Just because this dog is able to hold on for 8 hours doesn't mean that will apply at all times. It may be s...

It's their dog, in their approved foster home -- surely there's some sort of system for not having this happen? Foster homes are hard to come by and they probably didn't want to upset this one by saying no. You were unfortunately collateral damage. I'm not aware of it happening often here in the UK...

It is a lot easier to teach boys than to teach men, boys are not set in their ways like men are and if handled right boys are willing to learn, men arn't. I'm sure you're right (I've only had girls) - you're right about men being stuck in their ways. Stubborn and willing to cut off their nose...

I just clip mine. A walk on a hard surface smoothes off any snaggy bits.
They wouldn't stay still long enough to grind them down even if I had the time to do 4 dogs that way. (The 5th dog never needs his done.)

I do think part of your original post suggests that you just want rid. To be fair, that's a natural reaction for any parent who thinks their children may be in danger. Once the trust in a dog has been damaged, it's hard to get it back. (I don't trust our BC 100% in certain circumstances.) However, ...

One important thing I forgot to say is that you need to make sure that there is no medical reason why his behaviour is worsening. Has he an injury? Are his hips OK? GRs have quite a high incidence of hip displaysia. How are his thyroid levels? Does any of this seem to ring any bells? http://www.cani...
