Re: Ear question
Doing TTouch *right* is like doing Positive Reinforcement training *right*. If you do the training right, it works. If you do it kind of correctly, it only kind of works. If you learn and understand the principles and technique/s and use it appropriately for each dog, results are more likely to be g...

Re: Dogs can read canine emotions
There's no doubt that dogs have become well attuned to people, but a person's ability to ponder, understand, theorise, empathise, is on a very different level to that of the smartest of dogs. Dog emotions are translated almost directly into behaviour. In my layman experience, dogs 'typically' react ...

Re: Dogs can read canine emotions
This subject has always fascinated me. Dogs can pay very close attention to others' behaviours as a way to communicate, but is it empathy? I'd like to learn more.

An oldie but a goodie - A dog races up to another dog and says "Hello. My name is No No Bad Dog. What's yours?"

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Max the GH seems fairly out of his shell now (after about 12 months total) but still surprises from time to time. The other day while walking, a very nice but overly friendly young Collie escapee rushed up all low and wiggly but straight into Max's space. To his credit, Max simply gave an air snap w...

Re: Thoughts on Off-Leash Walking
Hi. It sounds like your dog is doing well while walking off-leash in a quiet environment. For walking I'd prefer to have your dog in a comfortable harness, with or without a lead attached to the harness. Rather than correcting/jerking the dog for behaviour you don't like, positively reinforce (Posit...

Re: Body Language to Communicate With Dogs
Hi. Are you referring to training tricks without using words, or everyday human-dog communication? If you say "Walk-time is at 9am", your dog might give a quizzical look. If at 9am you say "Walk time!", AND you put shoes on, pick up the leash and house keys, and walk to the front...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
GOOD news - After a checkup on Friday, the vet said Kelly dog looks in good condition and that the lumps/bumps at the back of her ribcage are not a problem, so that's a relief. We wound down for ten minutes at a quiet empty dog park after the 'scary' vet, and Kelly slept soundly most of the afternoo...

Re: The send away exercise
Hi. There are many similar cues used for different purposes, and requiring different degrees of training.
How about training to target an object, then gradually train/add more distance between dog and the target.

Good luck. Wishing Jasper a good 'report card'.
Kelly dog sees the vet this month for an annual checkup. Hopefully she gets the all clear.

Re: Dog walking
Hi. Sounds like a great dog :) that needs some Positive Reinforcement based training for the problem behaviours, and possibly a rethink about where/when you walk. I can imagine your dog feeling the pain of a pinch collar and trying to get as far away from it as possible, causing more pain and stress...

Re: Dog walking
Hi. Sounds like a couple of issues could be addressed immediately, as well as ongoing training and/or management. Has a vet found a possible medical contributor to your issues? Can you describe a typical day in your dog's life (like food-what and how etc., other dogs and people/kids, walks-how long ...
