And I agree, it's unconscionable that a shelter would put an 8 week old puppy to sleep for something that can be addressed rather easily with training. But I've seen so many shelters that will take the euthanasia route any time a dog shows any signs of food aggression (and you would think almost all...

I agree that it is a shame that an 8 week puppy should be pts for this, but the reality is that there are too many dogs and not enough homes or resources to keep them safely or work with them on aggression issues. Human and dog aggression are traits that can have genetic roots and some dogs may alw...

Progress and then ewwww, and some backsliding

For the most part, I've been making a lot of progress with Dodger lately. During the day, I only keep one set of blinds open, so that if something/someone is approaching on the sidewalk, I can control his reaction point, and the quiet command, along with a treat when he stays quiet (no barking) is w...

The runs causing increased appetite?

Okay, so if you read the food thieves thread, you know my Dodger got into a largish bag of M&M's. He's had the runs since then - not uncontrollable, but if he doesn't poo before we leave, or before we go to bed, enough that he will have an accident while we are gone/asleep. But at the same time,...

Just from my experience, I don't think he wanted to guard the chicken, he wanted the chicken for himself. Chicken in the trash was one of the things that would drive Loth into invading the trash can at night (and she was never quiet about it). But, if she did get into the trash at night, she usually...

Gah! We came home yesterday, Dodger had erm, had a virtual fit while we were gone. One of the things that we "found" was a torn up package of M&M's. My desk is one of those computer hutches from about 10 - 15 years ago. My printer is on top of it - the M&M's were on top of the prin...

It may also help to get an clock that ticks, and wrap it up in a blanket. Since they are used to being with their mom and their littermates, it gives them the feeling that they have their momma's heartbeat. Usually quickens up the adjustment period.

When we got Loth, my oldest son was about that little boy's age. My youngest son was about 3. Even with the most loving dog, the most trustworthy dog, because of the nature of children that age it is going to happen. It never indicated that she thought the kids were a problem (but eventually she did...

Oh, and just to share - my in-law's aussie shepherd is a champion table surfer. Once, he got about a half a block of cheese, and ate it all (including the saran wrap - which of course came out the other end. and um, my mother in law thought trying to take a half a block (and I mean a block about the...

Sounds good! I'll try it. Is this the only way or are there variations of the ingredients that make Kong last long? Would a hot dog work instead of Nat Bal sausage? I do have Blue buffalo bisuits which he loves. Those will work i'm sure. I put different things in Max's Kong & freeze but he gets ...

Hmmm, let's see - for brevity's sake I'll stick to Dodger and my past dog, Loth. I'll leave Lucy, our first dog, just to say that we nicknamed her "pica dog" because she would eat anything, and while we had her we had to make sure that we pulled the knobs off our gas stove if we weren't ho...

20 years ago I brought a very cute Mini Schnauzer home to live with my 17yr old daughter and I. My daughter at that time was like most teen girls, a raging slob. Her room looked worse than a bomb going off at a garage sale. I would warn her to keep her door closed everytime the puppy, John Buddy go...

Loth, our previous dog, got into so much stuff when she was younger, she seemed to develop a tolerance for chocolate. To the point that she would be M&M's, etc.

My husband and father in law cut out a cardboard template to replace the part of the sub-floor in the bathroom that had to be taken out. This morning, it was laying out in the yard, so Dodger creeps on top of it, and then when he realized it could move, he started pawing at it and playing with it. A...
