Re: How to motivate the trainer?

It sounds like you have answered your own question ! :D I think its a great idea to have a check sheet, not only to motivate but to remember what you have done and to check yours and the dogs' progress. I would still carry on doing paw touches . I've not used a pedipaw and not even seen one. I'm not...

Re: tilly and buddy

Sounds like my two!
Toys tend to get ignored becuase its much more fun playing with each other. At least it keeps them occupied.
Pip is older than Libby chi and he tells her off when he has had enough .
I do the same as you , I seperate them when it gets too much.

Re: Is it separation anxiety?

Try putting up a dog gate instead of closing the door . He could be acting like that because he's frustrated that he is shut away and you are still in the house. A lot of dogs act like this so its not an unusual problem . You can try desensitising him to being left behind a closed door , try givng h...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Yes, thats fine . There's no need to take her out onto the porch at all. Next step could be , just open the door slightly and slip your hand out and knock on the front. We give suggestions and you can adapt them to your circumstances. :) How is it going with the mail box training? Really pleased to ...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Regarding the whining, the thing with counter conditioning is you have to be super fast with the rewards in the beginning to get them in there immediately before the whining/ barking starts. Literally, dog sees/hears trigger- you start shovelling food down her before she even has time to think ;) i...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

I'm not sure if this is a fluke or not, but today, I wrapped her in a blanket and put her on my lap during mail drop-off. She only whined once! She heard the terrier barking, but she didn't react. She shook a little, but didn't bark. Basically, every time I heard a dog bark, I gave her a bit of bac...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Equestrain said I can definitely put a harness on her for the training at the mailbox. If she's not quiet when she sees one of us put the mail into the box, what do I do? Just keep repeating it until she is calm? Thats a good question . I would expect her to be excited to start with because the fron...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Edited to add: I've cross-posted with Dibby so apologies if we are going over the same things.. I have some ideas I think might help (others will correct me if I'm talking out of my bum ;) ). I've been cross posting too ! It takes me so long to write a post, sometimes an hour that I'm not surprised...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Unfortunately, I think the trigger is not the mailman approaching the house or the mailbox. It's the terrier dog next door. As soon as he starts barking in the late morning to early afternoon, Gracie knows that the mailman is on our street and it's all downhill from there. She gets especially upset...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Just curious, when I drive her to the park, why should I let her out when she's completely freaking out and shrieking? She shrieks and yelps to get out of the car no matter the destination, including the vet, family members' houses, the park, etc. I just don't want to reinforce crazy behavior. Yes,...

Re: Need Help For Out-of-Control Bichon Frise

Lovely post, Sanna. :) The trigger with the postman seems to be the neighbourhood dogs barking as he or she goes along the road. Equestrian, Has Gracie been spayed? Even though Gracie is your first dog , you have a better understanding of her than most other dog owners do of their dogs. Its a real l...

Re: Need Help For Out-of Control Bichon Frise

gosh , It must be very over whelming for you all . What is your dogs name? I have a little chi who works her self into frenzies sometimes so I really sympathise with you . It sounds like she has become an adrenalin junkie and is not able to calm down at all . The problem is that every time she kicks...

Re: growling aggressive puppy

Congratrulations on your puppy . I would avoid picking her up or physically moving her when she is guarding her toys or the rug or when she is tired . Does she normally settle in her crate ok? I would try luring her into the crate which a very tasty treat , make it worth her while going in there , t...

Re: Do You Think There Is Ever Really Dominance Aggression?

This is an interesting discussion and rather comnplex ! I need to read the link and re-read all the info I have about it. My computer crashed and I lost a lot of online info I had from way back about 1999 :( , when Dominance aggression was a term defined and frequently used by vet behaviourists incl...
