Non dog related Rant
So a few weeks ago my family is vacationing in Sequoia National Park. While dogs are not prohibited in the park, they are prohibited from all the various hiking trails. You know me I love dogs, but I simply cannot understand why people, in clear violation of signs still bring their dogs hiking in ou...

Re: Old Dog New Behavior
Its amazing how fast DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) can cause a down turn. I have heard its closely related to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Chloe has started to show more difficulty in walking and so now is unable to enjoy the old morning brisk walk. She still gets out twice a day for a slow walk aroun...

Re: Difficulty grasping the "down" command
Just an observation in general. Your dog "downs" naturally without prompting or given a cue several times a day. Take advantage of those times. When he is laying walk over calmly and reward. You can alternately use a small towel or rug and play "magic carpet" Lay a towel out and ...

Degenerative Mylepathy
My old girl Chloe was diagnosed several months ago. She is slowly loosing her ability to walk. Eventually she will loose control of her bladder and bowel. Then her forelegs and then she will succumb to respiratory failure. She is 11 now and the typical progression is around 6-9 months after diagnosi...

Re: The Suspended Trot, Demystified
One to two breeds I am looking to own in the future...I love Pharoh's too. I have also seen a broken coat Ibizan Hound a few years ago. (broken coat refers to a combination of being both wire hair and short hair which is of course a breed fault for looks, but I look more for performance and temperam...

Re: Question about "alpha" etc
Having been very active with Agility and flyball, there are numerous factors most people tend to neglect when assessing why their dog did not behave: 1. Dogs do not generalize very quickly. Just because your dog will sit in your living room does not mean he will sit in an open field when a rabbit ho...

Re: Bear didn't react!!
Much of dog issues is just plain posturing and certainly may have actually been play. I have seen dogs that growl and snap in play while barking. I would laso be looking at the body posture of 3-legs, though it may be challenging as only having 3-legs may make it difficult to properly assess respons...

Re: Bite Inhibition for Adult Dog
Thanks, ckranz :D The reason I was worried was because any dog is capable of biting at any time and I don't want to take any risks of her dog biting anyone. There was once a therapy dog (Golden Retriever) greeting a person in a hospital. The person (who if I remember correctly had some form of ment...

Canine Magic
Most of you know that my girl Chloe does Pet Assisted Therapy work and has been working now for 8.5 years. There really should be some kind of award for that. Anyhow, even at her age, 11 now, she is still quite the special treasure. Our most recent visit was to a community college to help de-stress ...

Re: Bite Inhibition for Adult Dog
Honestly for therapy work I would not worry about bite inhibition and focus more on her ability to greet people, work on strange surfaces, around strange smells and various equipment. If she is a mouthy dog, she probably is not suited for therapy work as you do not want a dog putting there mouth on ...

Re: How to Talk to Other Dog Owners
One other problem is that it would not stop a dog with food aggression and could make things worse. I certainly put the health and welfare of my dogs before anyone else's dog and will do anything necessary to protect my pups. The good news is that You would never have a problem with my dogs: They do...

Hiking in San Diego

Re: How to Talk to Other Dog Owners
If there's any dogs on a restricted diet in my area I pity their owners :P I live in a fairly urban area and I'm willing to bet my homemade treats are the healtiest thing you'll find on the ground 'round here  . I also suspect that there must be dogs who think I'm the equivalent of Doggy Santa...

Re: How to Talk to Other Dog Owners
One huge problem with the treat landmine and other tossing of treat are that some dogs are on food restrictive diets. Apollo for instance is on a Kidney diet. Someone throwing the wrong treats down could cause him great harm and kidney failure. Other dogs may have serious allergies that could result...
