Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Mini-rant: spotted on an RSPCA site promoting a large lurcher: 'Typically for sighthounds, Gary has a high prey drive, meaning he is overexcited and reactive around other dogs, cats, birds and small furry things.' What a failure to understand 'high prey drive', by people who really ought to know wha...

Re: Introducing a demmel

I'm so happy - I decided to teach Jasper to file his own nails and it'a going fantastically. Why didn't I do this years ago? :D https://youtu.be/PNODTC40pfA That was just our second attempt. I was wondering how to encourage him to use both paws equally as he favours his left, but today he seemed to ...

Re: What Can You Add?

Manage her environment - so all food put away, bins in cupboards or with lids nailed down, shoes out of reach if she's that sort of dog, management round the front door in case she tries to do a runner. Favourite toys, games, activities, likes/dislikes (e.g. belly rubs). Intersactions with strangers...

Re: Weaning off afternoon walks

Though if you do play ball-chuckers in the garden, it's a good idea not to chuck a ball into a large tree heather laden with pollen... Jasper followed the ball into the tree heather, and the cloud of pollen it produced made it look like it had spontaneously combusted. Then J started wheezing, and he...

Re: Weaning off afternoon walks

Solution = warm weather + new tennis balls + getting the ball chucker out of retirement :D J thinks this is much more fun than a boring walk, I can fire off the 12 balls while sitting down, and tell him that's the lot, by which time he's ready to flop anyway. Hopefully this won't upset his joints, b...

Re: Introducing a demmel

But just think - take a year over it, and in a year's time, still very early in his life, you'll have dog happy for you to tend his nails, who will continue to do so for hopefully the next 10+ years - as opposed to having 10+ years of trying to deal wih a dog who either runs away or curls his lip wh...

'If it's the first time to use your pet mill for your pet, it's best to put the nail tip or too long part, do not worn too deep, so that your pet will slowly adapt it'

Re: Introducing a demmel

Maybe Miles would benefit from associating just his paws being held with a treat for now? He's still young, so you won't have to undo years of 'I don't like being fiddled with!' ETA: I'm thinking about my poor attempts at clicker training when the moment he saw the clicker he'd think 'Whoopee!' and ...

Introducing a demmel

The combination of Jasper's corn and my knee means that his claws are getting longer... and longer. He's also getting more grumpy about me clipping then - I could reliably take a tiny bit off one a day, but I got a growl out of him when I did that the other day. I've now ordered a dremmel but I'm re...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Thank goodness you managed to get Delta safe, Erica. Had the owner not seen you there? If she knew her dog hated Delta she should have acted before the GD did.

I learnt about the VoD when being advised to use it on Jasper when he jumped up. It didn't work...

Re: Weaning off afternoon walks

The snakey game was going so well this afternoon, till 'something' happened - I think the string might have got caught between his toes, but being J he didn't stop howling until some time after I let the line go slack. And then of course I could see him debating whether it was all my fault and he ne...

Re: Weaning off afternoon walks

I often feel like pointing out to those people that you wouldn't take your children to an adventure playground and then just walk round the outside holding their hands.
