Re: Curious behaviour query
I am pretty sure Judy is right - he was burying it for later consumption. Even if he wasn't going to ever eat it, some instinct still told him to cover it so another animal would not find it and "steal" it from him. My raw fed dog tried for her whole first year of eating raw to bury ...

Re: Fence or no fence?
I would always have a fence, regardless of breed. They provide safety for your pet and convenience for you. It is so much easier to just open the door and let your dog out into the yard for exercise and potty breaks when you don't have to worry about harnesses, leashes, etc. And as Nettle said, it's...

Re: Don't be weird
That was hilarious - especially the 'no lifting' one! My sisters dog is a 70 pound lab male and he often lifts my little Piper's hind end right off the ground when he is sniffing her. She doesn't mind and will simply start walking away on her front legs - it's actually quite funny. (And Piper is one...

Re: Snufflemats in Shelters?
I have never heard of these before. I love this idea! Thank you for posting. I Googled Snufflemat and found a great tutorial for making one. Can't wait - Piper will love this!

Re: Guilt
I hear what you are saying Erica. We had that dog for eight wonderful years (we got him from sheltie rescue as an adult) and in all that time that was the only time he ever chewed anything and the only time he ever had that reaction when we came in the door. I have to believe they are related.

Re: Guilt
I can only go by my experience several years ago with my Sheltie. He was a lovely dog that had great house manners. We came home one day and the minute we came through the door, instead of greeting us happily, he tucked his tail and looked at us sheepishly (one might say guiltily). He had never done...

Re: Random Chatter
While going through the new posts i noticed an unfortunate trend starting where spam bots post directly into preexsisting threads. hopefully this is just a one day thing and not the start of something new. :? Actually, this is not new. I have seen this tactic used on this forum for a long time. :(

Re: Mixed feelings
To my mind, a dog killing a rat (that is not of the domesticated kind) is neither an ethical nor legal issue. It's a dog doing what that dog was bred to do. I value life, but once rats encroach in or around our homes, we are going to get rid of them one way or the other for the health and well-being...

Re: Mutts vs pure
Because I have a purebred (Pembroke Corgi), I get a bit of flack from friends and family who love to wave the "adopt don't shop" banner. Over the years I have adopted, rescued and bought purebred from great, responsible breeders. I have no guilt for any of my pet choices or how they came t...
