Re: When do you step in?

Hi Bendog I think a pup doing this and an adult dog doing this are different. Would anyone agree? I wouldn't walk in an arc to avoid a pup mucking about like that. Both my dogs engage with pups, even if they are bouncy or timid. I do agree it doesn't help your cause if everyone avoided you. I felt b...

Re: When do you step in?

Yes I agree. All dogs, even if they look like they are ignoring, have certainly clocked the other dog. I think the way I see it is if the dog has lots of chances to meet other dogs and everything is set up well or rewarded well, that dog finds other dogs less exciting and more normal if you see what...

Re: When do you step in?

Hi I am the same as Nettle. My dogs generally arc around dogs to avoid or to assess first. I avoid dogs who do the following: - dogs who crouch down (usually means they are worried or unsure and will react defensively or run off, or jump about like to loons to play and you don't know which until you...

Re: Growling with toys

Buy them the book Plenty in Life is Free. I too feel very sorry for this little chap. Why must people read into stuff way beyond what is necessary. This is where the term HE JUST WANTS TO PLAY is fitting. Poor thing. Can you get them to join up here or one one of the facebook pages dedicated to non ...

Re: Barking non-stop: It drives me crazy!

I heard shelties are renowned for this. Lots of shelties doing HWTM bark too.

How do you know she is barking during the day as a habit and not for another reason?

How long did you try the walking off during training method?

Re: lip licking

Agree with Nettle. Also are we sure the 'contented' cases of lip licking aren't that noise they make with their mouths as if they are tasting something nice.

Re: New dog: adjustment questions

In the articles section, there is a post on toilet training adult dogs. Are you leaving things on the surfaces that she can get at - food in particular. Because once the dog has been reinforced inadvertently for jumping and found food, all you do is make sure there is nothing left on the work tops a...

Re: Need help with my frenchie.......

Did the vet carry out a FULL thyroid test? You have to ask for one of these - they are not routine hence why it was mentioned above. I suspect that these outbursts don't come out of nowhere - there will be subtle signs he feels unhappy/uncomfortable or threatened about something. A hardening of the ...

Re: Shock Collar For Howling

I have spent some time reading and re-reading the posts. And I think...... I have possibly seen the pattern of when he howls and when he does not howl. I don't think it is SA. It appears to me to be when he knows you are with someone else and he is locked away - and you said yourself he likes people...

Re: Help!!

This would be better in the behaviour section. It can take a while for a rescue dog to settle in. Could you have his bed in your bedroom? If not, then do you know if he is happy being left alone in which case I think you should be looking at separation anxiety. Info here. http://www.rspca-westhatch....

It occurred to me that dogs perhaps cannot shake off effectively with a thundershirt on.
