Help me with this discussion
I'm having a civil conversation with the other trainer at the rescue about how I don't think going through doors/eating first/being higher up affects how dogs view us, status-wise. She said she doesn't think "the latest research invalidates the basic principles of leadership." I am having ...

Re: Reese the chihuhua
Hi Arianna, welcome to the forum. Reese is going to need a full vet check, including bloodwork and thyroid tests. Behavior can be affected by underlying health issues, and if it is medical then no amount of training will help, so that is important to rule out. That being said, it sounds a lot like R...

Re: My 2 female dogs (one newly adopted) not getting a long
I agree that the situation should be interrupted if you see that your pittie wants to play and your gsd does not. Get the pittie to play with you, instead. If you don't want to constantly be watching their interactions, you can invest in a baby gate to keep them apart or have a leash on your pittie ...

Re: Digging, Bolting, and Jumping!
Bolting may take a little longer to work on. You will have to build up Frankie's recall very slowly. in addition to this, i also teach 'bye bye' .......which can eliminate the bolt from the get go........if the 'default' is to run and jump in the car they often don't have time to even think about r...

Re: Digging, Bolting, and Jumping!
Hi, welcome to the forum! Can we get a run-down of Tito's and Frankie's typical days? When/where/what/how they eat, how often walks are and for how long, any training--how long it lasts and what it consists of, playtime, how often they are left alone and for how long, etc. No detail is too small! Fo...

Re: Rawhide aggression?
This trainer has a WONDERFUL video showing how to slowly get your dog accustomed to having their ears cleaned (this is for medication but would work the same way for cleaner): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_VzNv7TC9U

Hi, welcome. :) No need to apologize for the length of your post--we love details! I have to say, it sounds like Daisy has a marvelous life. Please share a pic if you'd like! Re: Italian Greyhound Puppy Aggression
Hi there, welcome to the forum! :) We'd love to see some pics of your little ones if you'd like to share. What are their names? Toy/treat aggression: This is 100% normal and appropriate. :) Most dogs do not like other dogs or people taking things from them. To a dog, possession is 10/10ths of the la...

Re: Marking = confidence or anxiety?
I'm finding this thread very interesting. Ruaraidh is usually a calm wee guy in the house, if there's nothing doing he'll curl up and sleep quite happily and seems to be housebroken because he does poo outside (we have a dog door so he has free access to the garden). He does mark in the house somet...

Re: Dog refuses to move when he sees another dog
This is a game you can play that might help him to stop staring intently and lying down when he sees other dogs and is on leash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdraNF2hcgA It's called Look At That. You basically teach him that he gets a treat when he sees other dogs while you're out on walks (use so...

Re: Marking = confidence or anxiety?
Makes sense that as with many behaviors, context is super important. :) In the BATting 1000 DVD, Grisha Stewart mentioned that somebody did a study showing that peeing/marking was a great stress reliever for dogs, so she encouraged students to let their dogs pee/mark in the middle of BAT set-ups. An...
