Re: Fish oil confusion
I have no ethical issues providing salmon oil at all. I give my dogs a nice, quarter-pound (113 gram) snack of salmon every two to three hours on the trail. I have friends with fish wheel permits who sell me chum salmon (dog salmon) for one to three U.S. dollars per fish, depending on the str...

Re: Anyone used Melatonin?
I give some dogs melatonin supplements in some situations. It can be a useful adjunct, but it's not a magic bullet. I have one dog who has been diagnosed with canine obsessive compulsive disorder, and from time to time she'll start getting a little on the compulsive side - melatonin coupled with a c...

Re: sign of stress?
Does she actually use her bed as a bed while she's in that area? If she has another spot she prefers she may not think of it as being her nest.

Re: Dog's social behaviour
Adult dogs generally give puppies a "pass" (like a 'get out of jail free' card) until they reach about 5 or 6 months of age. Then the pass is gone, and they will 'correct' rude behavior. The growing pup learns to interact more appropriately with other dogs in order to earn the 'reward' of ...

Re: Who is YOUR inspiration?
I'm inspired by a lot of people. Ray and Lorna Coppinger are right up there, as are George Attla and Lance Mackey. Colonel Norman Vaughn was pretty darned inspiring during his day, too. Janece Rollet (https://www.karenpryoracademy.com/node/513) is very inspirational as well.

Re: Scout's health
Any time I see a sudden change in behavior in one of my dogs, the first step is a trip to the vet for a thorough check up. Certainly a UTI can result in behavior such as you've described, as can some gastrointestinal issues.

Re: Any help possible?
In a severe case such as this, I'd recommend seeking the assistance of a certified canine behaviorist or veterinary behaviorist. Given the breed and issues I think it deserves professional attention.

Re: sleeping arrangements
Sleeping arrangements at my place are widely variable, mostly because I have 20 big sled dogs, and a very small house. Most of the time I rotate my sled dogs through the house, with a different pair of dogs inside each night unless my GF is visiting with her dogs. In that case, her border collie mix...

Re: Sharp parts in whole raw carcasses
A lot of dog mushers feed whole chickens to their sled dogs, and I've never heard of an issue with beaks or toe nails. If you are concerned it certainly wouldn't hurt to just remove them before you deliver the bird. 10 minutes seems like a long time to eat half a chicken, unless Oreo is a very small...

Re: Checking out a sled dog puppy.
LOL, he does look like he's wearing a hat, doesn't he! It was very cold here yesterday, so that is frost from heat loss. Like Siberians, malamutes and other traditional sled dog breeds, Alaskan huskies are double coated dogs. They have a very plush undercoat that provides insulation, and a longer mo...

Re: Checking out a sled dog puppy.
gwd, I was wanting to get a profile picture of him, but he is a very curious boy and no matter where I move around his area he moves to square up in front of me. As he settles in and becomes more comfortable with his new mates and surroundings I should be able to get some more representative images ...

Although there are still some unanswered questions, I made my decision today. You can read about it in my blog at http://oldschoolak.blogspot.com/2013/01/wild-and-free-stardancer-dozer.html . Meanwhile, it's my pleasure to introduce you to the newest little big dog in the Stardancer team, Dozer. htt...

Re: i got a puppy too early now what?
It will all work out fine. There is no reason I can think of to delay training, just as you'd train any other puppy. He may actually be more attuned to you than if he had remained with his litter. If you have a friend with a litter about the same age, plenty of "dog time" would be helpful ...
