Thanks for the response, Nettle. Unfortunately, 2-3 of our daily walks take place in the dark. And what Rusty considers comestible isn't always recognizable as such to me. He also tends to walk with his nose to the ground, often picking things up from under a bush that he's been sniffing or some oth...

My dog is a scavenger
Rusty is an approximately 2 year-old Jack Russell mix that I adopted from a local shelter about a month ago. He ended up in the shelter after being taken as a stray running the streets. He gets a high-quality dog food (Blue Buffalo), along with a variety of treats and the occasional table scrap. He ...

Attention seeking and marking (two separate issues)
I have an ~2 year-old Jack Russell mix that I adopted from a shelter about 1 month ago. He ended up at the shelter when he was caught running as a stray, but I really believe he originally had a home, as he came to me basically house trained, as well as very people oriented. We are currently in our ...

I'm amazed!
Rusty is the 2 year old JRT mix that I adopted from a local shelter 2 weeks ago. We started our obedience classes last night - it is a clicker training class, and our lesson for this week is "Watch me." It's pretty obvious to me that Rusty was someone's pet before- even though he was picke...

Identifying the trigger
Rusty is the 2 year old Jack Russell cross I got at the humane society about 2 weeks ago. (He had come to the shelter after being caught as a stray, but he is too well behaved in the house not to have been someone's pet.) We are doing really well together, but he often gets spooked when we go for a ...

Just a quick update - I've found a very acceptable compromise, that is, a seatbelt tether. It attaches to his regular harness and is about 6 inches long. I keep it in the car and just attach it to his harness after he is in. Keeps him in his place without making him feel he is too restricted. Thanks...

Thank you both. The passenger side air bag in my car is automatically turned off if the weight on the seat is less than a certain number of pounds (and Rusty is much less). As to the seat belt harness, I tried that in the back seat - I guess I could try again in the front - but it really made him fr...

Am I overthinking?
I just adopted a Jack Russell from a local animal shelter. He had been picked up as a stray. He is a great dog - he already knows "sit" and "leave it." I'm pretty sure he had a home before, as he is just too good in so many ways. So why, you may ask, am I posting here? Rusty has ...

In reading your post, this doesn't sound to me like a pup who hates brushes - if he really hated them he would run the other way anytime he saw you with one in your hand. It seems more likely that he thinks of this as a fun game - he tries to take the brush and you try to keep it. That said, you nee...
