Umbilical lead

Rusty is an ~2 1/2 year old Jack Russell mix. I got him from the shelter about 3 months ago - he ended up there because he was found running the streets as a stray. Potty training started out as a challenge because he was used to going whenever and wherever he wanted. We've come a long way from wher...

training treats

I buy the Pet Botanics dog food - it is one of those foods that looks like a bologna/wurst. The slices are about 1 1/2" in diameter, and each slice makes 30-36 training treats. It comes in several different flavors, so Rusty doesn't get bored. It is the one treat I have found that he will do ab...

What would you think of this trainer?

My 2-year-old JRT mix (a rescue back in October) and I have been attending obedience classes at one of the local pet store chains. I originally signed him up as a means of providing him with some socialization because I am single, and we live on an island that is mostly deserted during the winter. (...

My dog goes to daycare on the 2 days a week that I work full-time (and not from home) - and he loves it. Your situation sounds like a wonderful opportunity, but you need to think about things like insurance, do you know doggie first aid and the like. You might want to check out the website for Pet S...

Cleanup question

Let me preface this by saying that my dog and I are 99% through the potty training process. It's more my problem than his - I don't always recognize his signals, especially if I took him out recently, since that makes me think, "He can't possibly need to go now - he just went!" That said, ...

clicker

It seems to me that you are not actually talking about clicker training at all, but rather an attention-getting sound that you make BEFORE issuing a command. In clicker training, the click comes AS (or immediately AFTER) the behavior is performed. If you are talking about the former, it probably doe...

recession

One of the things that has been gong on here in NJ is the local food banks have started stocking pet food as well as human food in order to help people keep their pets. We had a pet food drive at the office to help out - just a thought.

Odd potty behavior

First, I wanted to thank all of you who have answered my questions in the past. I also wanted to acknowledge how helpful these forums have been. Just by reading the posts I've learned to think in new ways - and I've begun to be able to figure things out on my own about my dog's behavior. This one, h...

seasonal allergies

If it is truly seasonal allergies, then you may be in luck. My younger Lhasa suffers from leaf mold allergies, with many of the same symptoms. A brief course of steroids - and the end of fall, where most of the leaf debris is gone from the ground - is all it takes to clear her up. Hope your Jack is ...

free feeding

I just transitioned my dog, Rusty, from free feeding to scheduled feeding twice a day. By adding just a bit of canned food to his diet, he took to the new routine like a champ. And it had the added benefit that he doesn't drink as much water so he doesn't have to pee as often (a great thing since al...

Thanks for the response, Nettle. Unfortunately, 2-3 of our daily walks take place in the dark. And what Rusty considers comestible isn't always recognizable as such to me. He also tends to walk with his nose to the ground, often picking things up from under a bush that he's been sniffing or some oth...
