Re: Dog vs dog food agression

Hi. Where do you go from here? Where do you want to go? Have a goal and work towards it. Dogs *in general* are basically opportunistic scavengers, including at the dog park. I personally wouldn't push too hard on making dogs tolerate each other more, when they're eating. I feed my dogs usually with ...

Re: Neutering?

Since there seems to be polar opposite opinions (for different reasons) on the board, maybe Victoria can share some thoughts on the subject. :)

Re: Neutering?

Hi. Eight months is still a young dog, but de-sexing is also a (mainly good) 'thing'. I base my opinion for de-sexing when it's safe to do so, on guidelines from the RSPCA who have to deal with an endless supply of unwanted pups and dogs on a daily basis. Only some of those dogs and other animals th...

Re: Prey drive failure

I hope anyone reading this thread understands the importance of context.

My own personal opinion is that it's definitely not beautiful for a pet dog to attack anything. :!:

Re: Newbie Lurcher Owner

Hi. Could you clarify if your dog is a lurcher or a greyhound. Greyhound ex-racers can need fairly specific understanding, especially at first while they're settling in and tying to make sense of their new situation/home/people/etc. Cheers. :)

Re: Inter-male aggression

Hi. No advice, just some thoughts. Kelly dog sounds similar on-leash but her 'radius of fear' is getting much smaller, wears either a flat collar or harness, and is mellowing with age (now 8YO) and consistent calm training, quiet walks and quieter detours, and lots of practice reading dog (and peopl...

Re: Nervous GSD pup

Hi. Something I'd say which may or may not be relevant, is that my Kelly dog has come a long long way as far as being more comfortable/tolerant about most things, but the first initial urge (reflex? hard-wired?) to react at random noises/people/dogs around home has hardly changed at all. On-leash sh...

Re: help with year old GSD

Hi. During walks maybe lose the corrections like "no" and "ahah", at least for now. Rather than correct the 'bad' behaviour/s, reward behaviours you like. Can't help thinking of the some frustrated walkers and their confused dogs, and hearing no, no, stop it (name), no, etc. as t...

Re: Watch me

HI. What do you use for treats/reinforcement? If it's always high value, maybe vary and eventually lower the reinforcement value - sometimes chicken, sometimes jerky, sometimes kibble, sometimes play, sometimes just praise. Adjust the reinforcement value until you see behaviour that you like. But, i...

Re: help with year old GSD

Hi. He's a one year old GSD, so rambunctious comes to mind :) . Constructive and routine activity/ies should help him. Taking him, and yourselves, to a course of basic obedience training using positive reinforcement techniques, and no choke, pinch or shock collars, would be a good idea if you haven'...
