Re: What's your "heart" breed, and when did you fall in love?

Athletic dog shaped dogs with no exaggeration and little need of grooming. Dogs that are unlikely to involved frequent visits to the vet or die of cancer or some other inbred condition before they get into double figures. Dogs that would never, ever be seen in the show ring or be admired by passers ...

Re: What breed for me?

It's funny you should mention parti poodles - one of the two breeders who have passed my scrutiny does breed some partis. They are gorgeous! :) I'm waiting to hear back from the two final breeders about a couple questions. I'm hoping the answers will help definitively break the tie because I like b...

Re: Non dog related Rant

Maybe it's a case of unreasonable laws being ignored? Of course there are going to be people with no common sense or consideration - they exist everywhere - but just why are dogs not allowed in so many parts of the enormous US, not even on lead? My daughter and her partner spent a few days at Yosemi...

Re: DNA results

What gets me about the DNA testing scam is the frequency with which rare breeds come up in the results. Doesn't make statistical sense to me. I have a small rescue mongrel with absolutely no recognisable breed in in her appearance. She is what she is - unique. I'm not interested in a piece of paper ...

Re: What breed for me?

Oh, I forgot to mention. With poodles, stick to black, white, silver or blue. Stay away from chocolate, apricot and red. The latter are the 'weird/ditsy' colors of poodle-dom. The only concern I have with nettles suggestion of goldendoodle (obviously other than I, as a rule, oppose designer breeds)...

Re: Problem teaching "Down" command

I'm not big on luring or anything that needs phasing out myself. I would advice though that before you tell someone to not lure or that "its not the best way" or "not a personal preference" etc. that you be aware of your "audience". Luring is a very easy starting point...

Re: Problem teaching "Down" command

Try and capture a down at home. When he's about to lay down, have treats/clicker ready and reward when he does it on his own. This. I'm not big on luring or anything that needs phasing out myself. When my hound X was a pup we had some down issues so I went for a walk to have a think about another a...

Re: Study challenges causes/risks associated with bloat

I've never needed to pay to read the study which was carried out by Purdue University and is the best and biggest study we have so far afaik. It was certainly widely available at the time. When I started agility over 15 years ago almost no one fed their dogs before competing. Now a lot of people do ...

Re: Two Bitches Fighting

Unfortunately, just keeping them apart in the same house will prevent injuries, but wont prevent stress building up in both of them... Which is not good for either one. I have to agree with this. I have 2 dogs that fight and they cannot ever be allowed free access to each other. No amount of traini...

Re: Explaining Breeding Aspects

Breeders of all sorts come out with excuses why they do it and how great and responsible. The dog world is in the mess it is in now because of the tunnel vision of people who have created the breeds we have now and their ignorance of the complexities of genetics and how you often get unexpected and ...

Re: Can playing ball stress my dog out?

Some dogs, notably those with a high work ethic, readily become obsessive. Collies could not do their proper job if they were less than obsessive. Twelve hours a day running up and down hills finding and herding sheep, day after day, week after week, in all weathers - takes one helluva working driv...

Re: Can playing ball stress my dog out?

No exceptions - every collie (and several other high-drive breeds) ever bred is a nutter if unfulfilled in its work drive. As someone surrounded by collies much of the time I have to disagree with that sweeping generalisation. Firstly, the collie breed may have a label as "high drive" but...

His sister's face makes me think GSD or collie, but I could be way off.
Such a shame the poor boy's ears and tail have been mutilated.

I think GSD for the sister too.

Re: Dog Conformation

No help on a breeder sorry. The GSD I took a photo of apparently is a pedigree, but I only have his breeders name, and she doesn't seem to be able to be found online :? I mainly came to this thread to mention that my agility club are running 6 sessions of a "canine athlete" course with a ...
