Re: Bite Inhibition for Adult Dog

Any dog would have snapped if attacked like that. Bite inhibition is just that - inhibition. There is no such thing as 'bite extinction'. I think her point is that if a dog is taught bite inhibition then when he does feel the need to snap the damage will be minimal, he may not even leave a mark. Pe...

Re: Allergies, heat, or choking?

If it's actually phlegm I would agree a vet visit is in order. If it's just some foamy spit she may just be spitting while coughing/clearing her throat. It may be mild collapsing trachea. Panting hard and collar pressure could cause the trachea to collapse and she coughs to reopen it. The cough woul...

Re: Cocker Spaniel Snarling - Help?

Try and teach him verbal cues to move him instead. Teach a cue to get him off of furniture, teach a hand touch behavior (he pokes your hand with his nose) so that you can move him almost anywhere. Teach a solid recall. In the mean time if he needs to moved and you cannot encourage him with body lang...

Re: How do I stop using treats?

To start weaning down treats you need to keep the rate of reinforcement very high, just not 100%. So first start by always rewarding the first, but maybe not the second. Then reward a few more, then skip another. Later you can not give a treat for the first spin, but give it for the second even if h...

Re: Ticks and treatment

If I had a dog with a thick coat or a dog that didn't allow me to handle him all over I'd likely use monthly preventative. With Tucker I can give him VERY thorough tick checks every day as he lets me get everywhere. At one point I wasn't checking between his toes and that was a mistake, found a big ...

Re: How to respond to barking

When we come home he only barks if we are taking too long to come inside as he gets overly excited, but you can tell the difference between that and his usual more aggressive bark. People in general he's not bad about unless they actually come onto our lawn/are walking very slowly/pacing in front of...

Re: How to respond to barking

I guess part of the problem is that our previous dog (and only other dog we have owned), Max, didn't bark. I think I heard him bark three times in his entire life, all at strangers in our yard after dark, so serious stuff. So, after being raised with that dog, we see Tucker as the weird one when rea...

How to respond to barking

I have not poster in a while, so before i get to my question here is some background on my dog Tucker. Tucker is a 3 year old Chihuahua mix that we have owned since he was 10 weeks old. He was fearful of people when we adopted him and this bloomed into aggression when he was around 4 months old. He ...

Re: dog filing nails

All of Tucker's nails are black except two on his back feet, it's a pain. And I seriously took off the smallest amount of nail possible without taking a long time (since the poor boy looked like he was about to die, he holds his breath) and it quicked him. With doing the filing the nails can get sup...

Re: Post-anaesthesia crying

When I wake up from anesthesia I am a whining, crying, moody, mess. I kick my feet, make sobbing whiny noises, have a terrible scowl on my face, repeatedly ripped off my oxygen mask, punched the bed, etc. And then one of my brother's, after being home for several hours after having his wisdom teeth ...

Re: dog filing nails

After he got the nails short enough they started to file evenly on the nail. The one new problem I found is that he has one nail on each foot, the inner most nail (what would be a person's pointer finger) is not getting filed while his outermost nail is super short. I tried to clip those nails yeste...

Re: Dominant puppy

Do your dad and brother have any relationship with the dog? Do they play with, cuddle, walk, feed, train, etc.? I know Tucker gives my dad the most problems and it's because he doesn't have any bond with dad at all they don't play and dad doesn't pet him or cuddle him often (something my dog likes)....

I use the same command for object or hand, I use target for using her nose and touch for using her paw.

Re: Barking / biting when people visit the house

With my dog I remove him from the room each time until he is able to cool down (I stay with him). It usually only take 2-3 removals for him to be able to stay quiet. However you could gate him out of the room, so he can see and you can train without him getting too close.

Re: Wolf-Like Behavior?

I don't really have any input on the wolf thing, just want to say that I know a LOT of dogs who approach other dogs in a stalking manner and are dog friendly. My chihuahua mix does it, which prompted me to post a thread about it on another forum and found that tons of dogs do it. I had a lab do it t...
