Re: To say something or not ... that is the question ...

Way to go, Ted! :D

I must admit I'd never thought about the logistics of feeding a chiuhuahua treats while walking - my back aches just thinking about it!

Re: Explaining Responsibility

It's not the walking that's tiring, it's squeezing everything else you have to do into the rest of the day! I really think the person who told me lurchers need two half-hour walks a day and sleep the rest of the time should come round and do all the housework that I can't seem to fit in nowadays

Re: Just plain rude?

Honey also will not come for a treat if she's gotten a fright but she will come to me for some comfort if I crouch down, she'll tuck herself into me and gather herself before she feels able to move on. I just squat with her every few steps and stroke her softly and calmly and it seems to make her f...

Re: Stress relieving 'remedies'

Zylkene made no difference to Jasper either. However, the plug-in DAP did seem to calm him, and I noticed the difference when it ran out! I tried a collar that was supposed to be similar to DAP but a different brand, and didn't notice any effect - though it was for when we were staying away from hom...

Re: Just plain rude?

The tomatoes worked really well... I told him to wait until they were halfway down the slope, then released him. He had to pulp them before he could slurp them up through his muzzle - in the second pic below I think he'd found a bit more pulp on the muzzle when he was halfway back. I'm now thinking ...

Re: Just plain rude?

Yep, you're right about Jasper being guardy, Wuf Wuf! The rabbit skins are mainly so I can work on this in a controlled way - I can produce them when I have the time to hang around and not worry about how I can get home, and if necessary he can carry one all the way home and I can tell people it's a...

Re: Just plain rude?

Just a thought but you could teach him to find a toy and show you where it is without him having to pick it up. That's a really good idea - thanks :D If the other dog reacted aggressively would Jasper have fought back do you think, or run away/backed off? Based on behaviour to date, he'd have picke...

Re: Just plain rude?

Yes, the muzzle is a problem for distracting him on walks. It's true he can manage to pick up all sorts of things while wearing it, even tennis balls, but I really don't want to give him more practice at this! He does need something else to do on walks, though, because his prey drive is beginning to...

Just plain rude?

Jasper is far too full of beans this morning   Of course, he had to chase after the jogger who had asked me 'Is he OK, because I'm a bit nervous of dogs.' And he never chases joggers... Come to think of it, yesterday, as I walked him on lead past another dog whose owner pulled it over to ...

Re: Pandering (acknowledging needs) v staying put (desensitise)

The question is - how to train for this. I don't have a good answer, other then "very gently". I agree. The standard 'dominance' approach seems to require that the dog finds the alternative to going into the scary situation - i.e. the consequences of resisting you - even more scary. I don...

Re: Pandering (acknowledging needs) v staying put (desensitise)

This is something that's often on my mind, as I have a dog who can be sensitive, and can respond to stress and frustration with quite spectacular tantrums. We used to show him as a puppy and tried to introduce him to lurcher racing, but he did kangaroo impersonations in the show ring and freaked out...

Re: Help- dog that snaps for no apparent reason

I'd also add... If you give him stuffed kongs and find he's still a bit growly, then sit away from him and ignore him, but occasionally throw tasty treats in his direction. Then try taking one step towards him and throw a treat, and gradually work up to being able to walk right up to or past him, dr...

Re: My dog doesn't seem to respect me

he's never happy to see me when i come home from work..doesnt greet me..greets everyone else in the house..he just stays on my bed and i walk up to him.. You know, it may be that this is a sign that he feels secure in your presence, so doesn't need to appease you to get your approval. You could vie...
