Re: Rabbit guarding

That would be fantastic, Emmabeth - thank you :D :D :D Say, a couple of rabbit toys, as rabbity as possible? Let me know how much they'll cost, and I can PM you my address :D I'm a little wary of making the return home from the walk wonderful, as he sometimes stops on walks and says he wants to go h...

Re: Rabbit guarding

I shall ponder all that, HM (too preoccupied giving Jasper tlc at the moment!). Any training opportunity that doesn't push them over the edge is always worth doing even if it doesn't end up helping with the problem :D Though I'm also thinking about ways of adapting his muzzle safely because if I can...

Re: Graze treatment

I don't think we have any honey :( But if he does lick too much, I could still spread jam or peanut butter on the other leg - thanks for that idea!

Graze treatment

After Jasper was a little s*d yesterday, the universe has brought down some karma upon him to redress the balance 8) We had a lovely walk at the beach and towards the end he found a Westie who was happy to chase him. As he ran away, he didn't notice the low strand of wire fencing off an area where s...

Re: Rabbit guarding

What would make it worse here is that the heathland we were on made national headlines back in June when it was ravaged by a deliberately started heath fire. The local media repeatedly tells us how devastated the wildlife (some rare species) has been and how it will take a decade or two for it to bu...

Re: Rabbit guarding

HM, thank you so much for taking the time to share all that with me! :D Sometimes all I really need is to know that Jasper isn't completely unique, and that other people have had similar issues... and most importantly, that they have got better! Jasper is far, far better than a year or so ago. At on...

Re: Rabbit guarding

what breed of dog do you have? He's a lurcher. Greyhound/deerhound/bedlington/Irish terrier. My theory is that when the sensitive greyhound can't cope, the Irish terrier kicks in. The bedlington joins in with the Irish terrier, and the deerhound is too immature to be any use whateoever (he's 22 mon...

Re: Prize Choice

The general guideline for amounts of raw food to give is 2-3% of bodyweight, though it will depend on the dog so you need to monitor their weight and adjust if necessary. I'm not sure if Prize Choice on its own would be a complete diet though - you may want to include some raw meaty bones & pure...

Re: No drive

Some dogs get bored by repetition quite quickly. They just don't see the point, and let's face it, if you were asked to sit or stand ten times in a row, you'd get pretty fed up too! I think the best thing is to keep sessions very short, but have a number of sessions throughout the day. Maybe once yo...

Re: Teaching "leave it"

Also, if he has a sock, I'd recommend leaving him to it, maybe walking past and dropping a treat, or distracting him and then let him go back to the sock. If he thinks you really want the sock, it will become more valuable to him. You'll need to make sure you put most of your socks away promptly so ...

Re: Rabbit guarding

I'm coming back to this thread because we had another rabbit-related incident today - he found a dead rabbit that had just been taken (or possibly found) by a buzzard. Rereading your advice I handled it wrongly - when I got the chance to put Jasper on his lead I led him away from the rabbit. The nex...

Re: Why do dogs lick you ?

I wonder if it's a factor that a 'wild' carnivore would have had her face stuffed into a carcase to feed and her mouth probably smells and tastes pretty good :?:

Re: Why do dogs lick you ?

I always thought (which doesn't mean it's true) that it mimics a puppy licking his mother's mouth to make her vomit up a meal for him. Jasper's not a very licky dog but I've seen him lick the muzzle of one dog he thought was the bee's knees, so it could be a way of saying 'Look, I'm just a little pu...
