Re: German Shepherd lunges at parked cars

If you are having trouble physically holding him you may want to try a front clipping no pull harness of some type or a head halter (but with a head halter be sure he's not getting a running start before lunging or he may hurt his neck). Harnesses are easier for dogs to accept so I'd try that first,...

Re: Dog telling off puppies/younger dogs

Sounds normal to me. Given his age and breed I would expect him to be somewhat protective of you. At his age he is also going to be less into playing with other dogs and may be a little less tolerant, he's becoming an adult. I work in doggy daycare and we have several GSDs. All of them have a tellin...

Re: Calming down

When Tucker was young, after walks, I'd put him on his long line outside and let him have his zoomies out there (often using his tennis ball to get him started). Walks are not the best physical exercise, they are VERY good for sensory stimulation (if you let the dog sniff/explore) but running around...

Re: puppy peeing at night

Where is she kept at night (crate, bedroom, free roaming the house)? How long is she being expected to hold it (what time do you go to bed and wake up)? Does she usually poop when you take her out for her last potty break at night? Does she always potty in a specific place in the house? At six month...

Re: Rescue dog...training methods

Definitely bring treats! The fact that he was able to calm down by himself is a super good sign that with some training you guys should be able to get him under control. I think not being on a flexi may have helped if, while he was on a flexi, he had to be quickly reeled in whenever a dog showed up....

Re: Dog aggression around food

I don't think Bryan was too out of line really, the spaniel took his food and that's a big no-no, Bryan didn't do any damage. Obviously things happen and you don't want Bryan harming any of the other dogs, so I'd certainly try and work with him. I think all the dogs need to learn a little something....

Re: Milo - Dislikes children, anti-social and aggression problem

1) His dislike for children I know it's due to the early years not being socialized well and I definitely regret that now but he seems to have developed a disliking for children. I live near an elementary school and I also bring him to some of my boyfriend's soccer games, where some kids are presen...

"Fun Police" behavior and Redirecting on Cats

This has been an ongoing behavior but is starting to have negative repercussions on my cats' relationship so I really need to figure something out. Tucker is our 4 year old chihuahua mix. We've had him since he was 10 weeks old. We have two cats, Willie and Neko, who are 8 and 10 years old. Both wer...

Re: Difficulty grasping the "down" command

You could try capturing or shaping. Capturing would just mean being prepared with clicker (or marker word) and treats and rewarding when he randomly lies down on his own. Eventually he should catch on and try to do it on purpose and then you can jump into a training session. Shaping means rewarding ...

Re: Golden Retriever puppy mayhem

We had the same kitty problem when Tucker was younger, he harassed the heck out of Willie. At one point it got so bad that Willie basically couldn't be on the ground without Tucker running over and starting to poke at him. Willie was miserable and nervous and that's not fair. At first I tried allowi...

Re: Body Posture

The posture they describe is an aggressive posture. I see it in doggy daycare with some dogs, we had one who did it ALL THE TIME with other males of similar size that were confident (but not puppies, small males, nervous dogs, or super wiggly derpy dogs), and then he got himself into a dog fight and...

Re: Working With A Trainer For Aggression

The trainer shouldn't be actively working with the dog the whole time. They'll talk to your in-laws about the issues, see the behavior for themselves (if possible), then come up with a training plan and instruct/show your in-laws how to implement it using the dog. Then between then and the next time...

Re: Nothing In Life Is Free

why? to what end? what is the reasoning for this? what issue/problem etc are you trying to solve or prevent? honestly just very curious, not judging you or anything simply inquiring minds want to know. To practice following those commands in everyday situations (not in a formal training session) fo...

Re: Nothing In Life Is Free

I think it's a fine way to practice obedience cues and add some self control. People can take it too far (not allowing their dog to ever self reward, not allowing their dog to ask for anything) but I don't see any harm in having your dog follow a command before getting pet, going out, eating, etc. I...
