Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I totally hear you! For water, we have two sources, and we have to drive to both: one is a five minute drive out of town, then a mile and a half hike to the creek, then hike back. The other is a ten minute drive out of town to the turn off, then a six mile drive on a rough road (15 miles per hour in...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Mr. Fundog and I went for a drive without the dogs to the reservoir today, to see how much water is in the backwaters (where the creek feeds into it). We discovered it has refilled sufficiently from the drought that it will be a fun place to take the dogs swimming this summer. Today was rather chill...

Re: Walks- Staying on 1 side, and close vs. follow

Regarding the off lead thing, when I let Annie off lead, I just keep going, and just keep an eye out for where she is. She is bred to stay close-- that is, in sight of me, and never more than a 100 yards away. She also glances up from her sniffing frequently to locate me, and will run to catch up be...

Yeah, Annie will drop anything for a bite of liver. But if I don't have anything tasty to "pay" her with, she will tease me, taunt me, and even ignore me.

Re: Vent!

Well this is embarrassing, but I need to whine about it: I hurt my back the other day, rolling over in bed, of all activities. Yes, I hurt myself in bed! (Okay I'll wait while you have a laugh. I don't blame you, really). So yesterday I had made a lot of good progress toward healing and repairing th...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Then there was the time six years ago-- I posted about it, my has this thread really been going that long? -- Dottie was stalking a bee in the garden. At the pivotal moment she pounced, and caught it....in her mouth, where of course it stung her. The poor little ninny was grumpy, irritable, ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

My, what adventures everyone's been having! I've been away all week, visiting my birth town and family. I stayed with my grandmother (I'd like to have a good long rant about that on another thread later), and Grandma doesn't have internet, which meant I could only use my phone to see what all ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

It's been raining cats and dogs all day today and yesterday. Tonight we are attending the "Relay For Life" event, and dogs are not allowed, so no walks for them-- they wouldn't really enjoy it anyway. For those of you in the UK-- I don't know if you have a Relay For Life or something simil...

Re: Ki

He was extremely frightened and looking for comfort. You followed his cue as to what kind of comfort he needed, and you have him that. Well done. It's the people who just scoop their dogs up out of the blue and squeeze them and freaks dogs out.

And again with the taking things away: Always trade him for something higher value than what he's got. The more you do this, the easier it will be in an emergency.

Re: Help me please

That's easy. Someone else with this problem was advised also on another thread. If he growls, stop. Hands off. If he comes to you and appears to ask for pets, offer two strokes, then hands off, and wait. If he does something to ask for more, continue a minute then stop again. If he growls, hands off...
