Re: 2 dogs, but I want to be the pack leader,

We have a 11 year old boxer and a 4 1/2 month old Standard Poodle. My problem is this, my puppy relates to the boxer and is well behaved and is learning fast with training. However, when the two are outside, my Standard would rather be with the Boxer than listen to my commands. I want to be the pac...

Re: Dog Ready for a Head Collar?

So, I have been thinking of starting her on a head collar, maybe the Gentle Leader. But is she old enough at just 8-months? Anyway, I just wanted some feedback on this question because I have only ever seen adult dogs wear the head collar. Also, any tips on getting her started would be much appreci...

This sounds a lot like a recent Me or the Dog episode.

Nat, how did Chips feel about other dogs before you adopted Brian?

It has to be some sort of learned behavior for sure. Dogs quickly pick up on attention to any little detail (especially the behaviors you don't want LOL). One of my dogs had a very minor foot injury and when I treated it, I always said something about him having "a hurt foot." Within 24 ho...

I watch Ceasar, and I can see some beneficial methods... but I have to wonder... why are every one of Ceasar's clients aggressive dogs? Probably because Cesar's claim to fame, long before he actually became famous, was rehabing very aggressive dogs that were at high risk of being euthanized. The do...

Well, actually the reason I posted it here is because there were so many saying "it worked for me" not just the one person. A tv show can get to more people and by seeing the results (since most humans are visually oriented) perhaps it would have a greater impact. Honestly, I don't think ...

It's good to share different opinions. I think that exercise is such an integral part of a dog's needs that keeping a dog and not exercising it is as bad as starving it or making it sleep on concrete. There are worse fates than death. A lifetime of not being exercised is one of them, IMO, and yes y...

What is dominance aggression? To me that doesn't make sense with a dog, it does if it is the handler using it to control an aggressive dog. Not all aggression is fear based. The dominant aggressive dog is usually very confident and slow to actually fight or attack unless another dog repeatedly igno...

When we let a dog be adopted, exercise is part of the agreement, if the dog doesn't get the necessary exercise we have the right to take the dog back. There will be times when a dog can't be exercised like when the dog is ill or injured, same with the owners, but generally, it is a condition that p...

Mattie's advice is right on target. It's so important to look at the overall canine body language. That tail wagging can fool you. Seems friendly, doesn't it? But police, military and schutzhund dogs usually wag their tails while doing protection work and they sure aren't being friendly  In y...

Nettle's suggestions are excellent and are also effective with dogs that are dominance aggressive rather than fear aggressive. The only thing I can add is remember to be calm and confident. When you see a potential conflict situation, remember that you have a plan and are in control. If you feel str...

Re: Daily walks necessary?

Am I being unreasonable in telling applicants they must walk their dogs every day, hopefully for more than a total of 20 minutes? Is a one-acre yard a good substitute for a walk? Misha, in your situation I think you have to look at the "big picture." Do I think dogs need exercise every da...

Re: Harness that Doesn't Chafe

Unfortunately, I've yet to find a harness (or other product) that helps control Cooper on walks/runs that doesn't chafe him. The usual hot spot is around his armpits. I am waaaay late on this, but for any equipment chafing problems I go to a tack store and buy the fleece wraps used on horse halters.

No way was I letting my dog be around the creepo. True he has done alot of good for rescue dogs but come on you aren't a true dog lover in my opinion if you believe hitting or kicking a dog is right OK, I must have missed the Dog Whisperer episodes where he hit and kicked the dogs. I know he uses a...

I agree with ckranz about the importance of responsible breeders of purebred dogs (emphasis on the word "responsible"). Those breeders devote years, if not a lifetime, creating dogs with good health and temperament. They constantly work toward the betterment of the breed and are concerned ...
