'Good' vs 'bad' dogs
I got into a discussion on a non-dog forum this morning about whether there were bad dogs, or only dogs with undesirable characteristics, the wrong owners, with unfulfilled needs, etc. I was using the argument that as dogs don't have a conscience or moral compass, they can't be 'bad'. Only, when I w...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Thank you Nettle! Yes, I think with less experience with Jasper - and with what he was like a few years back - I'd say that some of his body language would be reason to get out of Dodge pronto. But I'm so glad that he can still be highly interested, and not necessarily in a good way, by an unneutere...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Jasper met an 18-month-old unneutered lab in the park today  We walked round together for quite a while. Jasper was intensely interested in the lab, who wanted to get him to play, but didn't quite overstep the mark. Nettle, I'm pretty sure you're going to say I should have removed him sooner ...

though some medication can cause ambivalent scents too. That makes sense - he was once besotted with a male lab who was on a few medications, I had to stick him on lead because he wasn't bothering with the foreplay  He met the schnauzer again today, when he was with OH, but was just friendly...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
How lovely that she was able to ask, Nettle, and you knew what she was asking - I think getting that communication going is more important than many other aspects of training. You realise that you're going to have to tell us how to play Egg Boxes and Envelopes now  Jasper took a fancy to a mal...

Re: Searching for safe bully stick alternatives...
Sorry... we avoid long-lasting chews because of Jasper's guarding habit! Do flavourd nylon chews appeal to her? Or antlers... though I'm not sure if they can harm teeth...

Thank you Nettle. Leaving him at the surgery was bloody hard - I just wanted to stay and hold him. I keep leaving the airing cupboard on latch so he can get in and out, old habits die hard!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49091905002_7f7c8b064a.jpg Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our beautiful cat, Monty, on Tuesday. He was very weak and frail, and was on antibiotics to try to keep on top of an infection that was probably a dental abcess (he'd never have survived surgery), but Mon...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog
Thank you Nettle. And I wouldn't want to suggest that it's ever a good idea for someone without qualifications/a great deal of experience to 'play behaviourist' - so though I've learnt a lot over the years, out of necessity really, I'll be very careful never to make the tightrope even narrower. It's...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Yesterday, we went to an open day at DS2's chosen wedding venue, where the rooms were laid out as if for a wedding. Jasper, of course, came too. He was a little stressed, though not necessarily as me as I steered him out elegantly iced cup cakes and canapes, wondering if he was anxious enough to wan...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog
Against my better judgement, and the advice of my elders and betters  I've been on a walk to the park with L and FD... starting from 30' apart and watching for reactions. Long story short... Jasper was a star. He wanted to get to L but didn't create a fuss when he couldn't. When we were in the...

Re: Dolichocephaly
It's a shame you couldn't access the article, Nettle. Here's the summay: Dolichocephalic or long face dogs have elongated skull and jaw bones, which give them their characteristic long heads. Dolichocephalic dog head shapes are closer to the natural shape of their ancestor, the wolf. This protects t...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog
Touch wood - this dog has been brilliant. When he sees another dog, he's ready and waiting to go to the side of the path and take treats - he can see the other dog, but he'd rather focus on L as she has the treats. I said that he might go back to square one when the owners walked him, but apparently...
