Re: Little victories in basic grooming - nail clipping

I've heard of dog's noses changing pigment with the weather/cold weather ("snow nose") perhaps the nails can do something similar. FYI I have no research to back this thought up, just an observation

Re: High Prey Drive

Thank you! Just printed this out and looking to get started - reading everything here is also so inspirational! Hubby, cat, dog, and I are moving from an apartment to a big house, big (fenced!) yard in under and month and I'm really looking forward to her walks turning into just exercise and trainin...

Re: High Prey Drive

Fundog,
Thank you! I'll look into books as well! I'm a bit sad because we're in the middle of a big move and have cut off our cable - right in time for a new US season of It's Me or the Dog!
I am very inspired by your story and am already itching to start training a 'Wait' command!

Re: Calling all Husky owners

Many breed books advise not to let husky's off leash as they will happily go off doing their own thing, not a care in the world. That said, maybe you can strap a harness on him and some roller skates on you and go for a ride :)

Re: High Prey Drive

Thank you, Nettle. I have a 6 y/o Brittany that we got from a rescue in August - we've got no background on her. She's been great so far and it's been awesome seeing her come out of her shell and is now eager to please. That said, we live close to lake access and can also drive to some relatively la...

Re: Oooh, a Llewellin Setter!

I saw TWO of these beauts at the dog park yesterday! I've always loved setters' constantly wagging "flag" tail - and these boys were never without a ball in their mouths! Phew!

Re: Little victories in basic grooming - nail clipping

The pedi-paws or dremel can be a great tool to use because it can get the nail shorter and rounder without squeezing the quick, but you can still easily quick a dog with a dremel, and as some of you see it will take much *longer* to get the dog used to it! But I definitely feel it is worth it! As fa...

Re: The point in clicker training?

When people ask about clicker training, it's often known that you must react to the dog's correct behavior within seconds of in happening. So, you make a positive association with the clicker, so you can mark the proper behavior as it is happening - and you use the clicker because you simply cannot ...

Re: Shock Collar

My Brittany and I regularly run through a few neighborhoods - and one has a very sweet and handsome shepherd mix - when he wags his whole butt wiggles!! We often see him out in his unfenced yard with his mom and he always says such a nice hello to my dog with all the proper doggie language! I notice...

I'm sorry to hear that. I think mum24dog hit the nail on the head with that one. I'm sure people who originally go into shelter work have grand ideas of changing the world but get overwhelmed with it all very quickly. Still no reason to act the way they did and it's incredibly immature. Depending on...

If you're not comfortable feeding your puppy no grain food until they're an adult then don't feel pressured to do it - but it is very telling how (on the review site) all the 6-star foods are all grain-free. I can't help you there because I've never had a puppy/adolescent. However, I DO know that co...

Not sure if you can get that message to a dog but from my research while we're in the middle of training recall you start with a "casual" command, like c'mere or c'mon, so the dog comes back to you, but can stop for a sniff on her way back. (I'm guessing you're already there:) ) Then there...

So maybe lose that, and instead have a 'health/grooming/diet' area, as these get less traffic, but still need addressing, even if for health we cant do much beyond advising seeing a vet and asking about/advising further research into a particular treatment or problem. More emotes is good though - t...

I think we'd all love to be able to use avatars! I'm sure there are plenty of ppl here who are visual like myself, it would help me keep track of who's posting.. and of course a great way to show off the pups :) I like the amount of forums we have - I think the only one I'd like to see added is &quo...
