Re: Positive reinforcement and Positive punishment (a rant)
i would call the training centre and ask them directly, if they say yes those methods are theirs, explain to them that calling themselves purely positive training is misleading (especially "do no harm") and ask them to change their website to make this clear. that way people can be discern...

Re: Helping a timid dog adjust?
arrrgh i had a massive long post typed out and my browser crashed - doh!! to summarise: good on you for giving this little one a second chance at having a loving and happy home! last year we adopted a gorgeous little pom who had been abandoned and hit by a car. the rescue cared for her beautifully b...

Re: cirtnella collar
I think she barks because she is scared and if she sees people and barks and then gets sprayed by the collar, she will be more scared. I want her to stop barking at people but want to do a positive approach spot on, and good on you for making this connection. as jacksdad explains, dogs noses are SO...

"Dogs don't do the things that annoy us specifically to annoy us. They have no idea why these things annoy us. We have to explain what we want in a way they can understand." "A reward says 'thank you'. It is not weakness to reward. We all work better for reward". i love these on...

Re: Clicker Training - Heres How!
yah, we do the 'string' thing too (sit/down/over), she has no problem with that bit - i guess i am just wary because i dont want her to JUST know it as an automatic string of behavior, if that makes sense? like if she really knew the difference between sit/down/over, i could ask her to 'sit' twice i...

Re: Ted
We have a no shoes in the house rule, he's pretty good at keeping from under our feet but if he does run into us at least it's a bit softer, although when we first got him and he was only 600g  we spent all our time looking at the floor to make sure we didn't hurt him! The upside is you don'...

Go back a step in the spin training, don't do play dead yet until you've proofed the spin. He might be getting confused. It's also possible that your sessions are too long and he's getting tired. I went a little too long this morning and after Murphy performed a figure 8 several times around my leg...

Re: Explaing Positive Reinforcement, rethinking key "sound bits"
very good questions jacksdad. i have thought about this a bit too, often finding myself on the receiving end of the glazed eye look if someone makes the mistake of goading me to talk about dogs  one that i often find myself saying is "everything a dog does, is completely reasonable to that...

so many things! i love it when the alarm goes off in the morning - instead of getting up and running to the kitchen, gypsy will clamber up on my chest and tuck her head under my neck for our 8-minute 'snooze' before its REALLY time to get up <3 (THEN she gets up and runs to the kitchen post-haste!)

Re: Dog park etiquette question
i agree its a bit of a balancing act, i think. on one hand, yes - letting dogs interact in their normal doggy way is good, and teaches pups about boundaries and rules in 'dog society' (echo jacksdad though, this isn't to do with 'dominance', just manners!) on the other hand, these interactions can a...

Re: Need Advice: Should Breeder Help?
echo all the sympathies...but i would just like to add, since you now know this 'breeder' is already immediately (next week!) going to put yet another litter of puppies in this same potential predicament, i would seriously call your council or animal control and report the living conditions of her b...
