Re: Resource Guarding - treats

.... if she even thinks im going to..... Be careful about thinking we know what our dogs are actually thinking. this can lead us down the wrong path and in some cases make things worse. A couple of common ways it can lead us astray is people by believing they know what the dog is thinking, reach th...

Re: Cavachon started growling at my son

sorry it took so long to get back to this. one thing I forgot to mention in my previous post, the growl it's self. think of that as the symptom and not the problem. If we only focus on stopping the growl, that would be like taking aspirin for a broken arm, but not fixing the underlying break. The gr...

Re: Cavachon started growling at my son

I admit she sleeps on our bed..... no worries and at the moment I do not see any reason to discontinue this. The problem is with my 17 year old son.... The first thing to do is look at how your 17 year old has interacted with Molly. Try to do this as "detached" as possible. people regular...

just rememebred why i took bax off the front clip. ..... no more front clip >.< sometimes tools can be a great help to training...tools such as a front clip harness. but I am becoming less and less a fan of them. which isn't to say I against things like front clip or that I don't believe they work....

Re: Sitting when meeting people

@jacksdad do you have any commentary on helpful ways i can teach bax to "ask" without him pulling? I feel like its a really fine line for "going in that direction" and "PULLING in that direction" my suggestion was brief because how you do this is completely up to you a...

Re: Sitting when meeting people

I agree, don't rely on the pulling. teach another way to "ask" to greet someone. this way you can "say no" before there is an issue be it pulling or getting up to someone who would rather not have a dog greet them.

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

also idk if anyone has stated this but i was always taught to bless the growl. growl is talking. growl is saying this is not cool. much preferable to snapping or biting to say what he wants. oh this is sooooooooo important. because I listen to the growl, respect the growl, I have avoided being bit ...

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

Finally, please don't pick her bowl up while she's eating, even if she seems fine. It is likely to be stressful for her, just as it would be for you if I came and took your plate away when you were eating (and you'd get pretty snarky with me!). Contrary to what used to be claimed, taking a dog's fo...

I debated to respond or not, but it is such a common issue that I went ahead and posted as if this was a current thread. I wanted people to know there is things you can do.

Re: HELP! My dog barks at EVERYONE!

Lol. Yeah I totally understand because I am a female and I want my dog to protect me.... Please be open to the possibility your dog won't be this dog. I have a really hard time letting him know the situation is okay and Im not in danger. There are two common reasons for this. first, he isn't actual...

Re: Crisis

Just had a chat with my mentor about barking issues and she reminded me that not all barking is equal. we as humans tend to lump it all together as just barking...barking is barking is barking. Understandably we humans tend to just REALLY care about ending it...BUT that isn't the right approach. eac...

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

I am looking forward to meeting the new trainer tomorrow and working on impulse control. Often it's not so much an "impulse control" problem, but a "the other activity is MORE...MUCH, MUCH, MORE reinforcing" problem. Reinforcement is what maintains a behavior. It is what makes i...

...hoping that someone can offer me some reassurance about my 19 month old rescue saluki/ greyhound cross Sparky. He's got a lovely nature and is very affectionate and loves cuddles on the sofa. He's our first ever dog and neither of us have ever had dogs when growing up. Little did we know what we...
