Re: Jasper's new toy

You could do any amount of paw targeting with any paw - a real challenge to get him to use the back feet!! If you can get him happy with each front foot then you might be able to very slowly build up to putting both front feet on it together to balance - very long term aim. Or if he learns to dribbl...

Re: Deaf Dog Aggression

Just to put out a deafie owner's point of view on headcollars, I chose not to use one wth Horus from day one, because being deaf he needs MORE freedom to look around and make the decision for himself of what he wants/needs to look at. Using a headcollar takes that freedom away from him, so if he nee...

Re: Positive gundog training - lovely video

Dognut, I rather think you have missed the whole point of the demo if you would rather be impressed by a different breed - she is a gundog handler, therefore she handles gundogs! I think you also need to listen carefully to what she says and watch more closely, as well as consider what and incredibl...

Re: Could do with some honest opinions

Yes, absolutely it can, but Jake is on medication so at this point it doesn't matter whether the problems are caused by the seizures which he cannot live with or the meds which he cannot live without - the fear still stands whatever the cause. My point is that we have no way of knowing what Jake is ...

Re: General Comment for General Chat.

I had one of the loveliest comments recently, which said it all for me. I was talking to someone I have recently met, and discussing how Horus used to be. He has a collie who is a fairly typical bored and anxious bossy collie *****, and I was trying to explain how changing a few small things would m...

Re: Could do with some honest opinions

I have very little to add to what anyone else has said, it is a horrendous situation to be in but sometimes you just have to keep yourself safe. For me life with a halti/muzzle and no teeth would be far worse than quietly being "let go" at a time of your choosing having had a lovely day of...

Re: Deaf Dog Aggression

I haven't got long to rely, so I will be back later, but I have a deaf lurcher x collie who came to me as aggressive but is wonderful now. Deafies can take longer to learn the bite inhibition, and there are tactics that work better with them than the usual hearing dog versions, but I'll talk about t...

Re: Switching to Raw.

Have you tried asking the butchers if they can get hold of chicken carcasses for you? Mine doesn't stock them but he orders a box, comes a couple of days later, £7 for about 60 carcasses!! They are mainly just the bodies, which is great as it makes one meal for a Horus sized dog! But a few of them c...

Re: "Tie the Kong down in the crate..."

Do be careful permanently blocking the small hole too tightly, there are some cheap versions of kongs that don't/didn't have the small hole and some dogs have had their tongues stuck inside in a vacuum where they swelled up and had to have the kong cut away to release them.

Re: dogs on sofas

It's nonsense :D Dogs are dogs, people are people, they are under no illusions about pack hierarchy. You do still need good manners though if you allow dogs on furniture - you should be able to ask them to leave if you want to and I also like to be able to say "not right now" if it's not c...

Re: Can dogs do grammar?

Horus can follow 2-3 signs in a string. Possibly it is easier to spot this with him because we have less signs than you guys say words. I have a few other deafie owner friends who have noticed similar - usually 2 but occasionally 3. Struggling to think of examples off the top of my head, but somethi...

Re: Shock Collar For Howling

Just to throw a bit more thinking into the mix, the vibration in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, it depends on how you use it. OP has already said she would never use the shock, which is obviously a good thing as I can't think of any situation where that could be a good thing to use. But some...

Re: A challenge for you all to ponder....

Thanks guys, I've not been ignoring you all, just wanted to wait and see what you came up with and think about it before replying! Bendog, that sealion was on a tv programme recently, and is what has spurred me on to do something big if I can. I may go with shapes rather than colours, because of the...

A challenge for you all to ponder....

I want to teach Horus something completely new, and completely different, and really challenging. I'm not entirely sure what it will be, but I have always wanted to teach him to "read" - words or symbols. My thought would be to read a colour and nose touch that colour. So, your challenge (...
