sometimes we aren't what a specific dog needs. no shame in that. making sure the dog gets what they need is more important and it sounds like you did that.
also, working with a fearful dog isn't for everyone. not shame in that either. and again, finding them the right fit is far more important.

Re: Fear aggression - some questions
Thanks Nettle. I suspect you may be right about the visitors, it's probably asking too much of him at this point. As for the play/interaction thing, I get your point, but I think we're trying to balance leaving him to ask and knowing that he can ask; he'd become pretty withdrawn and our suspicion i...

Re: New rescue, and grieving Mr. Fundog's Death
Fundog, Having seen your posts over the years, I suspect you would give the following advice (or something close to it) were you not the one going through the rough patch right now. 1. it's not wrong to have the thoughts and feelings you are. It is all part of the process. don't read into them too m...

Sounds like it has been a hard year for you, I am glad you felt you could come here and talk about it. Hang in there, feel free to chat away at us, and don't be a...

Re: Fixation with hoses, leaky taps and showers!
Obviously the main thing we do is avoid the situation, but sometimes this can be difficult. This is always the first step. The more your dog gets to practice the unwanted behavior, the better they will be at it. More ingrained it will be, and the harder to change. Harder does not mean impossible th...

Re: airedale and coyote playing
I know of Brian, was not impressed with his first book. read very much like someone who put the cart before the horse in terms of actually being a dog "expert" as claimed. If you do a forum search on Dognition you can find the discussions we had here. Always willing to give a second chance...

airedale and coyote playing
Here is a little something interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_GKqBqYANE *updated link to another source Been a long time since we had a video like this to mull over. My take, all play. Coyote is defiantly more comfortable, Airedale might be a little unsure, but does not look like a dog in...

Without being able to ask the person who said it, I am not so sure we will ever know what they were trying to say for sure.

Re: Social dominance?
Also lovely handling of a social dilemma by the husky, who was effectively saying: "You can interact with me but mind your manners because I'll stop our discussion if you forget yourself" and by doing so is teaching Mr. Mastiff how to behave. But gently, no over-the-top stuff. And Mr. Mas...
