Re: Any suggestions.....

I'm sorry it's such a frustrating problem. The re-showing him people and thus desenstising him to it, seems to be working, but sometimes that's a debatable method. On a leash, I would keep a distance. Find right before they do bark (See the tension/alert), praise, go back, repeat but at a farther di...

Re: Any suggestions.....

My trainer suggested tethering him behind the driver's seat, and if he kicks off, spraying him with water, but, I'm unsure about keeping him in one place without being able to move as he is not like any other dog and might develop cramp, pain or discomfort in his neck. He is never in a collar, alwa...

Re: No more episode chats?

On Twitter she's been saying she hasn't (won't) be able to tweet back and forth during some of the episodes. I don't normally tweet to her, so I don't know how that normal works when she can.

Re: Fork in the Road for me...

Work is certainly my first priority. It's a new job and I really like to prove myself to have been a good choice whenever I'm hired or asked to do any job. I will look into trainers in the area, and then once I get settled contact them and see if it's possible for me to 'shadow' or volunteer under t...

Re: Natural Dog Training

Ok, I've read more now. I like his energy "idea", because it is true at the shelter dogs do pick up on my energy but some parts of it I don't agree with from personal experience. My energy doesn't always cause them to calm down or become excited - that depends more on the dog, their 'geari...

Re: Any idea's about our girl?

webbed feet indicate pointer in the mix somewhere--- there are several breeds with webbed toes, but only a select number. Pointers are one of them. Pits are not. (That isn't to say there isn't pit in there; but definitely a hunting or water breed, and pointer is most likely) 8) Depending how she gr...

Re: Kill Shelter question

That's why I said it depends on the gas that is used; not every state uses/used the same gas(es)! By the way nightsrainfall, why did you "just decided to research death once upon a time?" I had to study "death" (to make this a short subject title) in my criminal classes i...

Re: Rehabbing an Ex-Fighting Pit Bull?

We had fighting dogs in the shelter last year (I'm a volunteer). We had both dogs who were trained to fight and a couple dogs who were used as 'practice' (there's a term for it but I won't remember). The way we adopted them out was that these were dogs that wanted only a 1 dog household and need to ...

Re: Kill Shelter question

Someone mentioned here that it depends on the gas they use. According to what was happening in the state of Alabama, they were seeing animals choke, whine, having what appears to be "epileptic seizures", and doing anything they could do to escape the gas chamber, among naming a few things...

Re: Natural Dog Training

I've just found it and been reading. I don't really think of it as a "radical new training method" though. I already 'knew'/'guessed' good chunks of it before reading it, and the people I learned it from already 'knew' a number of these things too. I do like the way he words his descriptio...

Re: Could use a little encouragement right now

I think the move will be hard for both of you. However once you all get settled down I'm sure things will go well. Don't give up, remember to stay positive. What is really great about dogs is they are tuned to us, but that's also really hard about dogs. They pick up on our high energy, our negative ...

Edited to add - I notice of late that the contents of some of my posts are appearing under other names in the dog press. This is copyrighted and I would be obliged if other trainers would ask permission and then credit the work, instead of plagiarizing. Board users are welcome to quote me  Ca...
