Re: My dogs have exploded
Haha, coat blow outs. Do you do anything special for it? Extra brushing and vacuuming I supposed... I once dog sat for two Alaskan malamutes during their coat blow outs. It was like SNOW it covered everything so well. I didn't know what to do the first time and tried my best to keep the owners house...

Re: Helloooo Horsie!
I'd be very careful around horses especially with animals or small children. Horses can spook or get stirred up, and once they do, it can be a very dangerous situation! They can kill full grown adults (hoof to head) or seriously injure them. A horse trainer I know has been in the hospital before bec...

Re: Dylan nipped someone today :o(
(((HUGS))) I'm sorry this happened. These things do happen - even though it's not ideal, they do. Mattie's right - it's more about what you or Claire do now for the future. Maybe walk her through some of the things you do so that it can be consistent between the two of you? As for why... that's real...

Re: Suggestions on calming my pup when I'm not home
7 hours straight for a 6 month puppy is too long. Are there any available neighbors or dog walkers that you could utlize to break up this time?
This is a great post that shows the puppy stages. viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1981

Re: Why Don't We Have A BSL forum here?
Truthfully I'm not active enough to achieve anything against BSL unless I'm either having a conversation with someone and it comes up or the BSL is locally organized so that I can make an impact on it. I think there are anti-BSL groups that have a good archive of information and ideas, but I don't r...

Re: Presa Canario Episode
Start with Patricia's work. being she is a scientist, ethologist and studying this stuff. What I absolutely love about Patricia, she isn't afraid to say "I was wrong" and make a change all publicly. I also subscribe to APDT's Chronically of the Dog and picking up names and info there to r...

Re: Are dogs omnivores or carnivores?
The article is highly biased toward animal consumption, not surprisingly (“animal protein is … more bioavailable than plant protein”, etc.), as is the educational system that trains the “scientists” who study human pre-history. Eating meat was not an important factor in our evolution, as you state,...

Re: Are dogs omnivores or carnivores?
We remain biologically a species of fruit eaters. Questions! How do you feel about milk, grains, yogurts, pickleing, cheeses... Or what about fruits and vegetables not from our local areas? How long should a trait or habit be occurring (ie new hunting style in an animal, a new ability, eating meat,...

Re: Rehabbing an Ex-Fighting Pit Bull?
In regards to Chance, what's the best way to come back from something like this? And since the puppy was involved and I don't want him to develop a fear aggression, should I start bringing him around other dogs right away or give him a cool-down period? Cool-down period always, especially if you ar...

Re: Presa Canario Episode
There is behavior that actual animal behaviorists are trying to describe with the term dominance. Their definition is NOT the one you are using. Hey do you know where that work is or who is doing it? I'd be interested in hearing/reading about that. I really like ethology though it's only a side int...

Re: Presa Canario Episode
HOWEVER, for one to stick their head in the sand and say that dominance does not exist(or not allow talk of it) is also incorrect and misleading. Don;t you all think that instead of saying that all trainers that use ecollars and prongs are training wrong, that one should say that most pet owners sh...

Re: Are dogs omnivores or carnivores?
I find this interesting, but cannot quite add to the conversation at this time, some of the articles I am finding as I am personally researching this are beyond my current understanding. I personally believe (without any true background information) that dogs are more on the carnivore side, however ...

Deaf dogs?
Any ideas how to work or interact with a deaf dog? We had one in to the shelter today and turns out I prefer vocal-cues. I couldn't do "this way", "Ah", or my happy voice... it really made me have to think a lot! I ended up shorting the leash and just slowly moving my legs into t...
