Re: When your dog is attacked

Thanks both. I will take that on board. Some people have said that I should have just let Ellie run, as she is pretty quick and would probably out pace them, but I don't think I could as if they got to her before I got to them and did her some damage I couldn't forgive myself. It just that by doing ...

When your dog is attacked

Hi all Long time no speak. As the title may suggest I am brought on here by a rather nasty incident that Ellie and I experienced yesterday. I am pleased (and extremely surprised) to say that we both came out of it totally unscathed. Don't ask me how as I have no idea. I won't go through the whole in...

Re: Dogs in the winter

Tee hee! And i thought Ellie was a wimp! :D I have to agree Em, Ellie will go all 'ooooooooooooh it coooooold' when its time to go out to the loo, but get her out for a walk and start throwing the frisbee and she's fine. She never stops hurtling about long enough to get cold and she doesn't wear a c...

Broken Tooth

I have just discovered that Ellie has a broken tooth, its the large molar at the back. It doesn't seem to be bothering her but I did notice that her breath was a bit whiffy which is very unusual for her.

So would you say this warrants a trip to the vet?

I would have to agree that grabbing his snout and saying no biting is probably not a good idea. i would say that physical intervention of this kind, albeit gentle, might actually make him worse as it gives him more to 'go at'. The only other thing I would say here is that again learning from my own ...

Please don't lose heart, puppies can be demonic, take it form someone who knows. Re the taking things, I am afraid that is just normal puppy behaviour and to some extent they do just grow out of it. Whatever you do though DONT chase them for things they steal, that just makes it a better game. I did...

My dog used to hate water too and wouldn't go near it. I saw this as a bonus really as it meant she stays nice and clean (she would even walk around puddles!) Until one day she was playing chase with a labrador and he, loving water as labs do, ran into the shallows of the nearby lake. Without really...

I think what Emmabeth and I are basically the same thing (I learnt at least half of that technique from her, half from my trainer), if you have somewhere to tie him to great, tie him up leave him to it. The one advantage of the parking up technique is that you can do it anywhere. Ellie (my Dobie) us...

My pup used to do this. She is a Doberman so even as a pup she hurt / drew blood / bruised badly. There were times that I was at my absolute wits end with her and thought that she was some sort of devil dog out to savage me! She wasn't of course, she was a pup with a lot of energy, despera...

Wow, thanks all of you, you have made me feel so much better. I really admire all of you who have taken on dogs like this and made it work and who constantly keep striving to keep it working. Unfortunately for Max his sheer size and strength was what made this totally unworkable for me, as the damag...

Do my psychic powers tell me you are from Newcastle? Right in respect of Albie, I would say several things. Firstly I would not recommend waiting for things to 'iron themselves out'. You are quite right that he is a pup and as such he should not expected to winning any obedience classes at his age, ...

This is difficult to write as it is an admission of defeat (or perhaps a case of gutlessness) and I am not the sort of person who likes to admit defeat and certainly don't like to be a wimp. However, the Max adoption / fostering is most definitely off. I met Max for the first time yesterday and it d...
