Re: Little victories in basic grooming - nail clipping
I have an interesting question for all of you: Have any of you have or ever had a dog that had completely black nails, then one day you go to clip or grind its nails, its nails in color go from black to transparent white or clear? :?: Ever since I've had my dog, her nails have been a solid black. H...

Re: Calming Signals
I was reading this thread, absent-mindedly scratching a dogs neck. She was licking her lips and turned her head away, so as a short experiment I stopped scratching. She instantly snapped her head around looking for my hand and thrust her head under it so I would keep scratching. When I started again...

Re: raw diet
I'm a first year in veterinary school, and granted I haven't taken nutrition yet. But I have taken an extensive parasitology course and what I took away is that the number of organisms they can pick up from uncooked meat is not worth the gain of a small amount of nutrition that may be denatured fro...

Re: Extremely worried
I'd say it has allot to do with the food. Pedigree chum is a terrible dog food imo. It often gives pups upset stomachs. Does the ingredients on your bag read like this? Ingredients: Cereals (min. 4% Maize, min. 4% Rice in the White Kibble), Meat and Animal Derivatives (min. 4% Beef in the Dark Brown...

Re: Tripe
I feed my dogs green tripe every morning with their veg mix. As long as it is a good source of raw/uncleaned tripe then they will get allot of benefits. Calcium/phos ratio is 1:1 and protein is around 15.1. There is also a good source of lactobacillus acidophilus and semi digested hays and grasses w...

Re: Toys for Strong Chewers....?
The usual answer is Kongs etc, unless you have a super-chewer. They turn up from time to time, you know a dog that will rip a black kong in half to get the food out as it saves so much time (glares at one of the Labs on the sofa). For those I pull out the Jolly Ball, it's a toy for horses to erm, ho...

aujeszky's disease was eradicated in the UK in 1981. For you American's if your meat is passed by th USDA then it is also fine. If you are unsure then freezing for 24 days is proven to kill the virus. Feed what you think is right for your dog and your lifestyle. There will always be cases of dogs ge...

Re: Raw Food Diet
I feed my cats a Raw diet. The hardest part was figuring out how to get a cat to eat veg mix, but if you mix it into chicken mince it tends to go down fairly well. Cats have a higher protein requirement than dogs and also need things like taurine in greater quantities, which they get from spiders in...

Old ways are best....
Positive reinforcement is considered by most to be the "new", scientifically proven best method for training animals. Thus replacing the "old" dominance based methods. I was reading through and old sheep dog training book written by G.O Wilson (she did amazing work rescuing the h...
