Re: Whippet attack

I'd go with your gut. You can't undo the castration if it does more harm than good. However, I have no idea whether it will help or not, but...well, you can't undo it. Have you tried the chemical castration with the other dog?

Re: How to tweak things or hopeless?

I read a pretty interesting part of Ian Dunbar's "after you get your puppy" book thing (free on the internet somewhere) where he suggests working on training every 25-30 yards on a walk. Walk 30 yards, ask for a sit-down-sit, walk 25 yards, ask for a sit-shake, etc. It might help reinforce...

Completely different question about headcollars

So I use a head collar when I walk the mastiff, Zeus. I use two leashes - one on the head halter, one on his collar, and make sure the head halter one has a good amount of slack at all times. He's really good, though, and I have a skin condition that basically means I'm allergic to touching things. ...

Re: border collie pup nipping

One, he's not being dominant. ;) That theory was based off of studies of captive wolves, which aren't like wild wolves, which are wildly different from domestic dogs. Dominance doesn't come into it. However, dogs do go through a period where they test their boundaries - sort of like human teenagers ...

Re: Victoria - CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES ON THE US SHOWS!!

Secondly, the consistency in appearance also helps with immediate 'character identification' to viewers. Sorry to lump you into that group, Victoria, but if that's what is happening, it has a long history in writing for television. Yes, I know we are all clever enough to know which person on the sc...

Re: Clumber Spaniel (working strain) Anyone else got one?

Well, to start with, I discovered very quickly how clever Annie's nose is, when she was just a three month old puppy! :D The little community park I took her to play fetch with her was littered with pine cones. I would throw some of those for her to retrieve, and the remarkable thing was, she could...

Fundog - sounds great! Whenever I get a chance to thoroughly groom him, I'll send you a PM so we can work it out. There might be some guard hairs in there as well, but I'll try to separate them if I see them. :)

Re: Leaving puppy for an hour...please help my dream come true!

My sister wants a Pomeranian when she gets her own place. She says "Captain will be the most spoiled dog ever, but you'll show me how to train him so he won't be an annoying brat." ;) I plan to do the same with my dogs! Give them the best life I can, while maintaining good behavior. :3

Re: Stop running away from me!

Several options come to my mind: -Keep a light-weight leash on her (on a harness, if you have one for her) at all times so you can catch her and it doesn't become a game. If she does try to start the "catch me", walk away and go make lots of treat noises - lightly shake the container they'...

Re: Water fountain

Our cats and dogs share a bowl of water, but the cats also have their own - a flower vase - up on the counter, away from the dogs. :) They seem to like the shape of the vase for drinking out of.

Re: Out To Lunch

He used to pick his own blackberries when he was younger - but now he gets room service  he'll pick his own raspberries too. Once our vet was visiting and the dog came and sat by the fruit bowl, staring at it. "What's up with him?" asked our vet. "He wants a pear" I said, g...

Re: Listening to your dog...

I've not had this problem personally...I'd rather be soaking wet than have to clean up a doggy accident (ever had a puppy get bad diarrhea in his crate, then roll around in it? It was DISGUSTING and not even my dog ;-; ), but Opal is fairly blatant about when she needs to go outside. She walks up to...

Re: Super Grooming Week Pictures

Of course, as soon as I say "I'm grooming Ami thoroughly this week!" stuff comes up...Monday, fine, that's the picture up there. Tuesday, I had less time, but still got a good amount of fur...need to add those pictures! Wednesday, I took the family's daughter to the dentist and ended up st...
