Re: Helping choose

The benefit of a Bernese is if you get tired just strap him up to a cart and you've got your own transport. I did something similar with my old Lurcher and rollerblades. He ran full pelt along the road pulling me on my skates. It was probably really dangerous, he was very quick (as many people...

Re: Helping choose

Well I've met about 6 Bernese mountain dogs (4 at once at a beach, they surrounded Merlin for a sniff. Poor thing was a bit worried... Until one play bowed. ) and they have all been absolutely lovely. One lives just around the corner from me, Womble, he's just a bombproof gem. When Merlin was ...

Re: Helping choose

Well, all of those dogs aren't recommended for first timers except maybe Bernese, but then giant dogs aren't usually recommended for first timers in general. They said they wanted a laid back dog that won't need tonnes of exercise, but they keep adding high energy working dogs to their lists! Both o...

Re: Helping choose

My extended family has alot of experience with rescue dogs, and it is 50/50 on if they work out or not. The best dog my close family ever owned was a rescue, but so is their most troubled. My aunt only rescues dogs, one was amazing, another killed all her guinea pigs and escaped, and their current o...

Re: Helping choose

Maybe her particular line are very chilled! I've always known Hovawarts to be very active working dogs, similar to pointers in their need for stuff to do. They also have a bit of a guard dog streak and can be wary of strangers. Maybe there is a huge difference between show and working lines. As Judy...

Re: Helping choose

Oh my word! Those are active working dogs not for first timers, what made them pick those?

Re: Helping choose

Clumbers from show lines are really unhealthy. They are also pretty stubborn as dogs. Working lines are healthier, but they are working dogs so need things to do. I like them to be honest, but I like aloof, stubborn dogs. Health issues means I would never go for one. If they like Labs, then they cou...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Blankets etc: didn't work for us either, but a dog bed did. You can customise it so the seatbelt tether goes through it. We use something similar to this; https://dogue.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/snooza-buddy-bed-metro-extra-large-slate-soft-designer-bumper-dog-puppy-bed.jpg For some reason i...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Good luck on getting a dog to like the car, I've never managed with Merlin. A few things have made it more tolerable for him so he no longer pants and drools though. Have a stiff, but comfy bed for him to sit in. The sides had to come up quite firmly so he feels enclosed, but he hated the crate. Giv...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

They all sound great, except Sandringham - bit of an athiest republican (the UK kind - not the Trump kind!). Probs give that one a miss! Thanks for the link Joanne, will come in handy no doubt! Lovely sunny day today. Merlin went to the woods early morning to miss the heat, then me and the OH ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Oh, what a fantastic location & views! We've stayed in Brancaster - best beach in the world! That isn't a long drive from Stiffkey at all! We might visit it. :) Oh you MUST! You can walk down to the beach along the sea wall, and often, in the last week of June, we could see for miles in either ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Oh wow, have fun there! Blackpool is far too busy for me. I prefer my beaches mostly empty with a couple of other dog walkers. Hope Lara enjoys the sea, do you know if she's ever been to a beach before?

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

We're staying in Stiffkey, right next to the salt marshes, three diff beaches, and the pine forest nature reserve! I am so excited. Merlin loves the beach but being in the West Mids it is a rare trip there. There is a river at the bottom of the garden aswell, incase its too hot for fluffy pants and ...
