Re: House training

Hi. The dog seems to be learning very well that coming inside means pee time? I'd suggest a trip back to basic house training routine/s, starting with zero 'accidents', don't scold or act cross or disappointed, set regular times for pee/poo breaks, 100% on-lead/supervision to monitor for signs of wa...

Re: Help! Severely traumatized rescue dog.

Hi. For many dogs, a brief experience of a shelter environment can be frightening, let alone having to endure it permanently or semi-permanently. I may get hate comments for this, but it's another line of thought. What is the likelihood of the dog being fostered out and/or re-homing to a loving and ...

Re: Lunging towards other dogs

Hi sophielilian. Sounds like your dog is starting to settle in to it's new home, and needs some more time, and proper training. Maybe try posting your question/s in Dog Training Advice, using NEW TOPIC (EG: something like"Newly adopted Golden Lab"). Cheers. :)

Re: anxiety and fear of men

Just my opinion and personal experience - My dog acted like she would eat my brother-in-law at their first meeting. She (Kelly dog) became more comfortable though after asking sister and BIL to completely ignore my dog (zero eye contact and especially no sustained eye contact, no "bad dog"...

Re: Fear Aggression and Reactivity

Hi RxB, Ditto the kudos. It sounds like you have many 'problem' situations sorted, and it sounds like we live in parallel universes dog-wise. My dog is KelpieXStaffie and a few years older. Motor mowers, vacuum cleaners, whipper snippers, bikes, skateboards are now not a problem (due to counter-cond...

Re: Ibizan Hounds Hunting

Hi. Pet dogs aren't part of the natural realm. I respect and don't necessarily disagree with all of your opinions but the point of my post seems to have been missed. Cruelty comes down to intent, and responsibility, and empathy, and that we comparatively intelligent modern humans can make choices. I...

Re: Ibizan Hounds Hunting

Again you'll understand that points of view can differ. Much of my learning about dogs happened via the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Australia. I would be vocal about someone encouraging (or even allowing) cruelty to a dog, not because it's a dog but because it's cr...

Re: Problem teaching "Down" command

Hi. Sounds like you've been taught a horrible mixed bag of ideas for training a dog. There's absolutely no need to touch your dog, to teach a "Down" (or any other behaviour). Try kikopup on youtube, for vid tutorials using only concept/s of Positive Reinforcement . Keep practise fun withou...

Re: Storm and noise phobic border collie

hi. Random noise reactivity is the pits, especially living next to a public walkway :( . My dog barks and snarls with hackles up and has a mini meltdown at *some* people and *some* dogs as they pass 2 or 3 feet from my fence. Try capture and reward when your dog IS calm. kikopup (Emily Larlham, dogm...

Re: Useful Links and Recommended Reading

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but I would recommend the book "Dog Sense" by John Bradshaw (BASIC BOOKS). Not so much about training techniques, but more about the reasons behind them, history and domestication of the dog, and how we can better understand and care for our canine co...

Re: Training not to pull

A couple more things I find helpful - =Apart from exercise and training Basic Obedience, maybe also think about training "Back up" (on cue), "Come around" like come around behind to heel position (on cue), "Wait" (on cue), and give ample opportunities to sniff or pee or...

Re: Storm/Noise Anxiety: Debate

"Can you reinforce fear?" IMO you can't reinforce the emotion of fear, but in my (layman) experience yes you CAN reinforce fearful behaviour, as you can reinforce less-fearful behaviour. I don't believe anyone has lived inside a dog's brain and returned to describe the experience (yet), or...

Re: Vent!

Ruthlessly inbreeding and killing all pups that don't match a template? It's 2013. Is this still practised at all? Is it even legal? Is it encouraged? It's immoral and disgusting. I'm 100% in favour of positive reinforcement training, and caring, and advocating for dogs, but I won't be revisiting th...
