Re: Having been rubbish with training, dog now doesn't respond?

Dont be too hard on yourself . I'm sure most of us at sometime or another haven't been able to give our dogs 100% Would you be able to buy him a new puzzle type toy and put his food in it ? I dont know full Pan's history but is it that bad that if he sleeps more. It might not be from boredom perhaps...

Re: Golden Retriever will only walk with me

Hi JudyN and Dibbythedog. Thanks for your posts and sorry for not replying sooner. Sophie (GR) had been on her own for a couple of hours when my friend arrived to take her up to her house for the day. Sophie just refused to go and had to be coerced/dragged up the road. This really surprised me as m...

Re: barking at people

Sorry if you have already thought of this but have you considered privacy fencing so your dog cant see people of that is practical. It might easily solve the problem. If your neighbours are willing to co operate you could ask them to meet him off his territory so he gets to know them and to throw tr...

Re: barking at people

Is this happening in your front yard or back yard? Does he now the people eg neighbours or are they strangers ? Is he in the yard on his own for very long? Is giving him a treat when people pass working ? My dog Pip barked ( and still does occasionally) at passing dogs in my front fenced garden. I h...

Re: Aggression in my young male Westie (resource guarding me?)

It sounds like resource guarding to me and may be becoming apparent now due to his age as he approaches social maturity or perhaps as Erica said maybe something scared him or he feels vulnerable in that position . Its similar to the type of thing my JRT does with dogs he doesnt know ; he also guards...

Re: New dog in house

Sorry to hear this. :( Yes, be patient and gently persist . I walk another dog daily and it would break my heart if this happened to me . Is there any day when they cant walk the terrier ? Perhaps you could offer for that day or maybe just suggest one day a week anyway . They may be more happier wit...

Re: Golden Retriever will only walk with me

Does she do the same when you are out ? I had a dog that was reluctant to go out of the gate without me but was happy to go if I wasnt at home . They could try taking her out in the car and driving to the park if thats practical  It would be interesting to see how she behaves , whether she is o...

Re: Self mutilation? HELP!!

She had it for years before we found out she was allergic to Frontline spot on drops. i found a link about yeast infections . It says sometimes dogs get yeast infectiosn becuase they h...

Re: dogs starting to fight out of the blue

You've been really brave and I agree with everyone else that you have made the right decision.
It would have been so stressful for all of you and long term stress is damaging to the well being and health of you and your dogs.

Well done for fostering a homelss dog. Good luck to the little fella and I hope all goes well in his new home.
I adopted Pip JRT about 18mths ago. He was saved from the pound and had some issues but has improved with postive reinforcement and is improving all the time.

Re: Dogs and chickens

I would think a puppy would be very interested and curious of hens and would want to investigate. Even if it didnt see the hens as prey, it would want to play. As Jacks dad said , best to make sure the chickens dont get out and make sure he has an outlet for his drives. I have always had small furri...

Re: Patrick Burns Terrier Man article in Dogs Today

Dogs Today is one of the best dog magazines about and Beverley Cuddy works tirelessly on Dog welfare issues. Sarah Whitehead and Peter Neville contribute the behaviour and training articles and many other top trainers have contributed to it. I dont agree with every thing that I read in it and I dont...

Re: Nervous Pup

It sounds like you have a good understanding of your puppy and h ave made good progress. She is lucky to be adopted by you. I cant answer all your questions but hopefully someone else can. The difficulty that is now emerging is correction, e.g. for chewing furniture, or requests e.g. 'down' w...
