Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

We will be keeping two of the puppies (a male and female). Two others will be going to the owner of their sire in Minnesota (Linda Newman's Points Unknown kennel) and one for sure is spoken for by Nita Fowler (our friend who has been so helpful). The sixth is kind of in the wind at the moment - he c...

Crossing the scary bridge.

In the south-central region of Alaska, musher Karin Hendrickson's team encountered a new challenge. A pedestrian bridge was constructed over Montana Creek. Although it made for an easier and safer trail, one of her dogs was very fearful of the thing. Here is the story of how she trained her sled dog...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

I'm at work, but on Sunday a friend came by the house and shot some photos of the babies so I could get my puppy fix. The puppies were 12 days old. Eyes are starting to open, they are becoming more mobile and more vocal. https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/1013757_1020389929574...

Thanks for sharing the report. I'm glad the result was so great. You did GOOD.

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

I wanted to get face pix of all the puppies today, but Chetan just wasn't up for it. I had already weighed the puppies and done their daily exercises, and she'd had about all the "fun" she could handle. Here are a few you might like, though. Frazil (our little white boy) was the biggest ga...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Nita Fowler (Sirius Sled Dog Tours) brought a friend and her two winter handlers over yesterday evening. Nita wanted to learn more about the neuro-stim exercises we do, and the handlers are interested in the Hedlund Husky Preservation Project and sled dogs in general. I'm horrible with names (sorry)...

Re: Demoing Positive Training, Baby Spaniel and Frenchie Puppy

You might want to consider training the two dogs separately. That way the behavior of one doesn't distract or interfere with the behavior of the other. With the wee little one you're starting with a fresh slate and I doubt you'll take long to train a lured 'sit' or other simple behavior. That opens ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I've sometimes wondered how do agility handlers keep track of the order they are supposed to follow on an agility course. Heck, some of us get lost on really well marked trails, and I don't see any trail markers in the agility ring. The important thing in my mind isn't how highly one scores in the c...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

We seem to be naming 1 pup at a time, a rather slow way of doing things, but we don't have to be in a hurry. We've decided that Glaciar is a good fit for the larger, silver colored male. While doing the neurological stimulation exercises yesterday evening we observed that nearly all the puppies are ...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

So far, we've chosen "Frazil" for the little white boy, because it sticks in my brain that Frazil is his name. We're still contemplating the others. Everyone continues to thrive. The little grub-puppies are growing right in front of our eyes. All are strong little swimmers and none hesitat...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Yesterday Trish and I weighed each of the puppy as we did the second day of early neuro-stimulation exercises for them. Keeping in mind it is day 2 weights, here is what we got (in U.S. ounces). White male - Weight 12.4 oz (351.5 g) Agouti male (white stripe on forehead) 13.7 oz (388 g) Agouti femal...

New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Chetan, bless her little heart, decided to whelp her litter on September 30th, while I was 3,000 miles away. Our friend Anita came over and helped my wife. In the process she captured these images of the new puppies at 1 day of age. 1 puppy was still born, leaving us with 6 healthy, squirmy little H...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

We have a St. Bernard X Alaskan husky mix named Chinook who is perfectly well behaved when he encounters a riderless horse, but let him see a human on his or her mount the poor boy goes totally bonkers. It's almost like he's screaming "Man on a moose, man on moose - mortal danger - man on a moo...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Poor Trish had SUCH a morning. She tried breaking up the ice on one of the dog's water tubs with the heel of her boot. That didn't work too well, so she grabbed an ice chisel instead. MY favorite razor-sharp, cut a hole in ice fast to water the dogs ice chisel. (Her favorite is so dull you could rid...
