Re: Unfit for competition?

Sky is a husky lab mix according to what the breeders told the animal shelter when they turned her in. She has some freckles on her nose though that we don't think are either a lab or a husky trait, and that many people have looked at and tried to add some third breed into the mix. At her last agili...

Unfit for competition?

Sky has completed her second class for Agility and I am noticing that a certain habit of hers may mean that she can never compete. I don't know however if this is a stress habit, or just something that some dogs do. The behavior is that she marks everywhere. Anytime Sirius goes, Sky follows behind a...

Re: about to give up?

Thank you Mattie. I was just telling my daughter that I think I need to go back to walking them one at a time. Which will mean alternate days due the the crazy heat we have been having. I hope to build an agility jump soon for the yard and could work with the dog that doesn't get to go for a walk on...

Re: about to give up?

Sky isn't a fan of grooming, but my son does play fetch some with her. He doesn't like to touch the slobbery ball though, so I think I may get another "chuck it" for his use. (my last one was given to someone else) I could see Sky maybe learning to turn on the lights. Sky kind of gets stuc...

about to give up?

I took the dogs out last night for what I will admit is the first time in more than a week. We have been working on training and play activities in the yard. We went to the mixed use low distraction location as I knew they would be wound up and need some refreshing on their loose leash manners. Sky ...

Re: Can No Longer Walk Dog

Another way to exercise a dog is to challenge their mind with clicker training games like things to do with a box. See clickertraining.com for clicker games. Around here we are dealing with rabid foxes, (I have orders from my husband to no longer walk the dogs in our favorite park. :( I understand h...

Re: Do I really need a fence?

One of the main reasons I finally fenced my yard was to keep wandering neighborhood dogs out. Once one has dogs that are taking care of their business on one's own yard, it is an open invitation for other dogs to come and check it out. After walking out of my door with my dogs on leash several morni...

Re: Dog fearful of other dogs barking at her

We live in a highly dog populated area. There are 5 or 6 dogs diagonally across the street that seem to have no issues with my dogs until my two leave the yard and hit the sidewalk. Then my dogs are treated like anybody else on the sidewalk and barked furiously at. (from the back yard across the str...

Dog fearful of other dogs barking at her

First a quick update. Sky my husky lab mix lifelong determined puller is finally getting the idea of loose leash walking. She still tends to start out rough, but is setteling in more and more quickly. Agility classes (and steak) are getting her focus more on me although she still qualifies as the mo...

Safe insect repellants

I use Frontline plus on the dogs to protect them from fleas and ticks, and use interceptor heartworm preventative. But then there are still gnats, and flies and mosquitoes that pester them. We also have a cat in the house, so I avoid any product that would be potentially harmful to the cat which som...

Re: excitement? anxiety? stress? good? bad?

I am using the loose leash walking training techniques listed here. I haven't really felt like she is necessairly fear stressed, more excited. She wants to check out or chase pretty much anything that moves. She loves children, people, other dogs (that aren't barking at her). She loves to cha...

excitement? anxiety? stress? good? bad?

Sky is my exuberant, energetic, easily distracted husky lab mix. In many ways, she seems very confident. She acts as though everyone she meets is her new best friend and like she loves to be outside smelling the smells and seeing the sights. She is also very visually oriented. I have had her just ov...

Re: When to take the next step

After reading all the informative comments on "every walk", I think I need to refocus my work with Sirius. While my quiet spot is fine for Sky, there is a lot of motor traffic which Sirius finds disturbing. She doesn't like motorcycles and trucks with low loud engines. I could move from th...
