Re: Fear Aggression

I made a sign for my people fearful dog. Kind of like a thin cotton jacket, with a picture of a dog, with a big green hand superimposed over the image of the dog, surrounded by a big red circle with a line through it. People think she is in training to be an assistance dog and are much more respectf...

Re: two pronged question

Okay, I'm adding a third prong. Sirius has yard guarding issues. Barking at people walking past that talk, freaking out, charging the fence, racing back and forth while barking in a frenzy when a dog goes by. Occasional charging a bicyclist that catches her off guard, etc. To combat this I have now ...

Re: two pronged question

We use a ceramic bowl. She does occasionally carry off or move the container if it is a special treat, like puppy ice cream, or meat scraps that have been put into something like a paper bowl. Sometimes she carry's it off to move it away, but most of the time it is just to chase it down and bring it...

two pronged question

In thinking back on the incident with Sirius and the park official last week, I realize that what I did wrong was not keep her engaged in focus activities on me while the conversation was going on in front of us. The conversation didn't involve me, we were waiting at a distance, and Sirius had been ...

Re: making progress

Thanks jacksdad for the reminder to take it easy with her for a couple of days after class. Fortunately the Rally class that she is enrolled in is very small at 3 dogs total and there is no "stand for exam" in rally. One of the reason's I chose rally for her. The instructor kept trying to ...

making progress

Sirius had her first Rally class this week. Her recent bad yard behavior and new bad behaviors when we are out walking made me uncertain as to just how she would do in a class environment. The behaviors of concern were agressive displays towards dogs, barking at people talking, and lunging and snapp...

Re: RECIPES: For Kongs, Meals, Treats, Snacks, and Food Toppings

I recently tried making homemade training treats for the dogs out of hamburger. Sirius loves the puparoni's but as they seem to contain mystery meat (on the front they say beef, but on the back it just says meat?) I decided to cut them out of her diet as she gets treated frequently due to working on...

Re: Loose leash walking question

This method kind of does both. Do you really want your dog walking in front of you? I find it is much easier to make turns and such when the dog is at heel. (or close thereto) Otherwise I tend to trip over the dog, have to stop and get the dog to come back, turn around in a circle to get where I wan...

Re: Loose leash walking question

In looking at the picture of the harness you are using, I would recommend watching out for rubbing where the buckles are.

Re: Large dog, little owner.

Work in the most boring place you can find. Boring to Zack that is. It also helps to make yourself a little more interesting. I take treats along and reward my dog everytime she looks at me. I notice she often looks at me just as we turn. (click & treat) I have learned that the more my dog reali...

Re: Scared of Barking Dogs

One of my dogs is likewise terrified of barkey yard dogs and the other one is a barkey yard dog. :D For Sky, who is terrified of barkey dogs, I turn around when we encounter a barkey yard dog. Then turn back around and go at it again. Sometimes we can get past the barkey dog. Sometimes the owners ge...

Re: thundershirt

So, would a snugly fitted dog sweater also serve the same function? It is a little warm outdoors for a sweater right now. I have scrounged around for some of my children's old t'shirts which I know there are some of around here somewhere, but haven't found them. I do however, have a sweater that I k...

thundershirt

I recently purchased thundershirts for both of my dogs after it was recommended by a friend and I read over the thundershirt web site. For Sky, I think she has some underlying anxiety issues that are often masked by her general exuberant personality. She often whines when still, sometimes while ridi...

Re: Unfit for competition?

I am doing some clicker training with her for focus, but don't know that I am that good at it yet. She will "go potty" on command even though she doesn't go for that long. Next class I'm going to try to arrive earlier for more marking time. Give her the go potty command, and take a tug toy...
