Re: Last Tips on Barking

you made a knock noise and he did'n't react? perfect...now pair that with a treat....knock at the level he doesn't react...follow with a treat. slowly increase the intensity of the knock towards a level he would normally react. not all in one session, but as quickly as you can without creating a rea...

Re: Puppy pads

I would advise choosing one or the other. use the pads or use out doors. you can change you mind later if you want if one option isn't working out as planned. but don't flip/flop. I would also make sure you use something like Natures Miracle to clean up any misses to the pads or when he goes places ...

Re: Last Tips on Barking

I don't think this is the time to be discussing backing off. if what you are doing is showing signs of progress, keep it up. If bumps worry, scare, agitate, create anxiety...EVERY SINGLE BUMP needs to be followed by something YUMMY until you are seeing a conditioned emotional response (aka a YIPPY r...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Frankly, I'm amazed that my friend's four dogs haven't had a major bust-up given that her house resembles a matchbox, particularly as Grumpy JIm is dog-reactive. But then he's fine with Jasper now... unless his pain meds need upping, when he might have the odd grumble. Maybe the fact that the young...

Re: Hatred of squishy faced dogs

So should I keep doing this, or instead let him look at them -> click -> treat -> look at them -> click -> treat -> so on? You said not to change tactic in your post Jacksdad, and I am using the 'watch me' tactic you gave in your last reply to me at the moment. I would stick with this for a while. ...

Re: Hatred of squishy faced dogs

I've been working really hard on Merlin's excitement barking at dogs, and he's coming on amazingly. However I have noticed his hatred of squishy faced dogs escalate. He and the neighbours pug (who Merlin has met before twice and tried to play with - pug didn;t like him) both had a handbags at dawn ...

Re: Walks before rabies vaccine

around where I live, while the rabies vaccine is required, unless the vet says otherwise I advise getting that pup out into the world. Socialization isn't about just going up to another dog and saying hi, it is about seeing other dogs, seeing other dogs play, seeing/hearing the public transpiration ...

Re: 14 week old standard poodle house training

Hi, We have a 14 week old standard poodle who is very good at not peeing or pooping in his crate or pen. Also when we take him out every hour to his eliminating spot outside he goes 9/10 and i think recognizes the command. However when he's playing or having some supervised time out of pen or crate...

Re: Resource guarding or what?

it is possible this is in part some "resource guarding", but with aggression I always start with health. is there pain, illness, injury...deteriorating eye sight... do not under estimate the effect of dogs loosing their eye sight being a factor in aggression. combined with him being new to you, ther...

Re: Almost 7 month old Pup

I was prepared to give him more treats but he didn't seem to want them. all you can do is offer. sometimes not taking the treat is a sign you are still too close. sometimes it is a sign that you are just right. see trigger, get rewards for doing something else...treat maybe for looking at you, snif...

Re: Almost 7 month old Pup

or increase your distance. worked with a fearful lab mix this weekend that needed close to 50 yards when the other regular size dog (lab, pit, Shepard etc) was running and playing with it's owner. small does walking by could be in the 20 foot range. non fearful, over excitable dogs have the challeng...

the damp brings out the smells. we have had our first frosts and the dogs noses are on over drive when out on walks.

Re: Almost 7 month old Pup

I don't have much chance to practice at distances where he'll only take notice with strange dogs... this is where the art and creativity of dog training comes in. there is a way to do this, you just have to find it. you know your environment best so think about the principles needing to be applied ...
