Baby Miles - a long stroll in the park (and lots of pictures again)

This park in nearby town closes for dogs on Apr 1. Tomorrow March 31 - rain expected. Which means today was the last day of the season for dog people. Everyone and their grandmother and a dog were out there, and we took a long stroll too. Walking on leash (nicely!) where people were, discovering she...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

We are doing great with lose lead walking with Baby Miles. Well... rephrase - Miles and I (and chicken treats) are doing great with loose lead walking. But Good Lord, it takes A LOT of patience! Meanwhile, my dearest wife and mother have already started getting him used to gentle leader contraption ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Ari would do that too. We didn’t even have to say anything, when he saw us setting up the dinner table - he would start looking out the window and pace around in anticipation of arrivals... way before they actually arrived. Some folks would ask - is your dog a little nuts? I would always answer - no...

Baby Miles - a busy day (lots of pictures)

Morning - first real walk in the park, meeting all kinds of dogs and humans. Baby Miles did well, especially with humans. Humans must have a soft spot for a 20 kg (45 lbs) cute but bouncy baby Ridgeback. Dogs not so much, but were very tolerant and even curious. Even small fluffy ones. Afternoon - a...

Baby Miles some times acts like Ari :-)

Baby Miles is a very different character, compared to Ari (RIP my dear boy, I still can't get over his sudden death, to be honest...) But in some ways - Miles is almost an exact replica! Seeing from time to time Ari's traits in our new little monster brings a smile and tears.. Ari: http://aritheridg...

Miles The Ridgeback - a gentle boy

Miles and a mini bull terrier puppy, playing before start of their class.
The BT is smaller, but fearless.
I thought that baby Miles showed remarkable gentleness in this interaction... he seems to be much rougher when getting into wrestling matches with larger ones.

This dog's owner is quite experienced and has had challenging dogs before -- even wrote a book about one which has received praise from people like Patricia McConnell -- so it's quite flattering that she's picked me to help her!
Impressive!! :-)

Re: Social dominance?

I am sure there are those who derive pleasure from intimidating others. Ok, flaky bullies. But how about this: BIG BOUNCY DOG: I want to play, chase each other, jump on each other, bite each other's ears, let's play!!! SMALL SHY DOG: No, I would rather just sniff grass... BIG BOUNCY DOG: Let's play!...

Re: Social dominance?

Somehow it feels that breed dimension is missing here...

Can a behavior, acceptable within a breed (for example large), be intimidating to another breed (for example, small/fluffy) without necessarily meaning the large dog being a flaky bully?

Still thinking :)

Re: Interesting behaviour

Goes to show the infinite number of possible combinations of things, which somehow create different conditions for dogs, and trigger different reactions. Training really never ends. When we reach some success - it's limited to the environment and conditions where we've been, but by no means a guaran...

Re: Miles The Ridgeback - The Journey

Baby Miles is growing :-) He just turned 3 months. Unlike Ari (who remained very quiet for a very long time), Miles has already discovered his vocal talents. And this boy is LOUD... Unlike Ari (who in 8 years had not damaged a single peace of furniture except making a tiny hole on the side of the so...

Re: Miles The Ridgeback - The Journey

First playdate today, with a super cool adult male. Fun, exercise, good socializing, and I am sure a couple of good lessons for our tiny land shark, who seemed to be very comfortable and confident engaging with a much bigger boy, and had a terrific time. All the credit goes to the big dog, of course...

Miles The Ridgeback - The Journey

Meet Miles (a.k.a. "Mr. Wonderful"). Miles is an 8 weeks old Rhodesian Ridgeback boy, just under 16 lbs. Being our second Ridgeback, he - at least in theory - gets the benefits of living with humans who have faced Ridgeback puppyhood in the past, and survived to tell the tale. Baby Miles has been wi...
